Loud BEEP when turning key
I just purchased a 2000 E320 wagon with 50k miles. The car was one owner and well maintained. The dealer Starmark prepared the car and is very clean for its age. The only strange thing is a loud beep when the key is turned to the #2 position. What is causing the beep?

loud through the speakers (vs localized from a specific appliance)? could it be the TeleAid thing? does the volume vary and dependant upon radio volume rheostat? I dont have TeleAid, but just guessing outloud.

Raymond,
It is loud through the speakers and happens about 1 second after the key is turned to the #2 position. It also will occur if the key is turned past the #2 position. It is happening with the radio turned off and doesn't seem to vary with the volume control. The car does have teleaid but I don't have a subscription for this car.

I've been in a Benz, sans TeleAid subscription, which emits a DTMF type tone upon start up. It was not a beep (which I interpret to be a higher frequency tone such as on an answering machine). The tone I heard was more line this ---> [tone]

Raymond,
Yes, the tone is about the same pitch as your link only much louder. Now I will call my service advisor to see what can be done about this. My 03 E320 doesn't do this or my wife would have really complained about the noise.

thanks, figure1a, for nailing this down. But on a lighter note, I was goofing around in my brother's 00 E320 and getting hot and heavy and lady friend (or I) somehow hit some switch and the MB voice comes over the speaker and asks if we needed any help. Really ruined the mood, but we laughed at that for the rest of the evening. See, the back seat can be safer....

Geez, not something that we would like to know, about getting hot and heavy. But that is funny with MB support comes on, I bet they heard you guys were moaning, just kidding.

Fwiw...
my 2001 e320 with Teleaid (no service activated) only makes that noise when the phone button on the steering wheel has been pressed.
I cannot personally speak of getting hot & heavy in the Benz, but I suggest tilting the wheel up out of the way next time!

SOLVED! It is the teleaid/phone system. Fuse #15 under the back seat or fuse #23 under the hood is used to power the this system. If either one is removed the system doesn't work. Easy fix. Of course the teleaid won't call but that was expected.

I tried it but it caused the SRS light to come on. I pulled them alternately and the light came on with either fuse pulled. Is there another way other than pulling the speaker wires? The cleaner the solution, the happier I will be.
Thanks!

I ended up pulling the speaker wire from the passenger side speaker and creating a shunt out of 3 resisters that I soldered into the dirver's side speaker to cut the volume.

well what you can try also is, open the compartment where your phone is locatd and press the power button on the phone, obviously it sounds like the phone is on.. i had the same problem and i just turned on the phone off, better yet, if your not planning to use it, just take it out, unplug it from the bottom
