Finished the first two set of Depo headlight retrofitting over the weekend (putting W211 Hella lens into Depo headlight, put in D2S 4300K).
Here's the picture.
- The first one is Depo the way it came (with H7).
- Next one is for Depo with W211 lens in & D2S, but not calibrated for focal point.
- Last is one with focal point adjusted (to accomodate the combination of Depo projector housing & Hella lens).
All picture were taken with 1/80 shuttle, and F2.0 apperture.
Pictures don't really do justice, since I took them during day-time (much brighter at night). But you get an idea just by comparing relatively difference of them.
Btw, I have 3 set of W211 projectors (use lens for retroffit), and 4 set of BMW E60 xenon projectors (retrofitt whole projector) coming this week. If you're interested, contact me at hhbk@yahoo.com

More pix. Taking with same camera setting (1/80, 2.0).
First is Hella projector w/ shine bowl, used in new BMW 5 series or Audi (A6/RS6). It's bright at night time.
Next is the Stanley projector. Some car maker put a little window on it (top of the shield line), like Lexus, other like Acura don't. It's whammy bright.
I don't have the E55 projector with me (sold), it as dull bowl, a bit less sharp, but nice color & bright as well.
Next pix is picture of projector, from right to left: Depo projector, W211 projector (E55 look the same, but has bi-xenon motor & shield), BMW projectors (Audi RS6 is same, but has bi-xenon mechanism), and last, the Stanley. First three are 90mm, and look similar at shroud mounting point, so retrofit is doable. Stanley have completely different shape & mount point, and is brighter than the German projectors (try to compare it w/ the crappy Depo from earlier pix
)
Last is pix of ballast, all are latest generation. Quite compact in size & efficient. From right to left: Denso (Lexus), Mitsubishi (Acura), and Bosch (Mercedes SL)

thanks for the information but a few questions?
-is it possible to hook up the lights to a computer's power supply to test them?
-will the w211 projector retrofit on a w210??
-how hard is it to fit these OEM projectors onto a headlight housing?
oh and I still didn't quite figure out where to locate a good set of projectors yet to fit onto my new headlight housing. I guess I ought to pay a visit to the scrapyard

yes, and is actually, not a bad idea as it would help give a preview of whether
you would experience the infamous 'bulb malfunction' msg. the plug whch
mates with the headlamp housing is a 2" oval and contains pins for high, low,
turn signal and city light. shouldnt be too difficult to get pinout info though
i've not done it. i have Fluke meter so can help out if needed. most folks will take the easy route (as did I) and power direct from battery or power supply, but they lose the preview through the car system.

i have spare E55 sitting around I dont need and can sell you. but it may be
cheaper for you to locate one nearby.

no

intermediate skill needed. not beginner. not super advanced. but does
require that the person have ability to synthesize and fit square pegs into
round holes, have good basic electrical skills, and how to perform splice
wiring.
