Watch that hood hinge!

i opened the hood yesterday and fully extended it in upright position. this is the first time i opened this car like that. when i came to close it i somehow did not unlatch it properly and without too much force broke and mangled the whole hinge....i took it off and am waiting for replacement. i also observed how thin and light the actual hood is. does anyone know if the hood is made from some special material.
cheers

The front fenders, and hood are made from aluminum.. Keeps the car weight way down...(Possibly trunk too?)

What's weirder is that... the W211 has more weight than the W210, and less usable interior space (especially in the rear) compared to W210!

I learned about the aluminum fenders when I was using a flashlight with a magnetic fastener to look under the hood. I decided I needed both hands for some reason so I tried to park the flashlight by carefully putting the magnet on the flashlight up against the side of the fender. The flashlight fell right to the garage floor.

Scorchie, I think that the trunk of the W211 is significantly bigger (at least a couple of cubic feet bigger) than in the W210. That is where the rear passenger cabin space went to; the trunk.

The trunk IS a lot bigger on the W211... so I guess I meant "usable by people sitting in the car"

The lower piece of trunk (where license plate mounts to) feels like plastic to me. Is that really aluminum?

In addition I found the A-pillar is not metallic, at least the outer shell. I had a rock chip and was wondering if I need to cover it up with touchup paint to prevent rust. Somebody told me not needed since it's plastic. True?

The insert where the plate goes is probably plastic. They have 2 (or more) - one for N/A plates and on for the nice looking European plates..

The license plate mount is just a plastic trim piece, like many of the parts on the exterior of the car (mirror, bumper covers, moldings, etc.)
