I don't think I understand your question. Are you saying that you bought a car without nav, and now you want nav, but don't want to pay for it? Are you further asking if MB puts an extra DVD reader, a GPS receiver, and a nav calculation computer in all their models, whether or not the customer buys nav? Is there an implied question as to whether you can do the software upgrade yourself, purchase the DVD disk without legally owning a nav device, keep the software up to rev level to track changes in other software in the car, and disguise the fact that you've done the software hack from any MB dealer that happens to be servicing your car?

Pretty much except if its only a software upgrade or a component or 2. I don't want to "hack" anything and I am willing to pay for the DVD's but not 5k for a system that might be already in place.

It is not there, you have got some $$$$ to spend if you want NAV.

... but don't all our cars already have some pieces of a NAV system in them because TeleAid is standard, specifically, the GPS hardware and wiring? Isn't that the reason that the NAV option in our cars costs $1220 instead of the typical $2000 price in cars without a built-in tracking system? That's not to say that adding NAV to a non-NAV car is just a software hack; of course it isn't; most obviously, the NAV display is a lot bigger than the non-NAV audio display. Adding NAV to a non-NAV W211 should be easier for a retrofit wizard, though, than to a car that has no GPS function of any kind in it.

You can buy a nav install kit for around $1k and put it in yourself. Comes with a DVD drive, mounting bracket, a cable, and trunk liner. Takes a hour the most to put in, plug and play. I posted some pictures of the install in this forum.

...unless he is from outside northern america...because teleaid is NOT standard in the ROW...

Even with teleaid...the only part that can be shared is the GPS antenna...teleaid is not a navigation device - it is a tracking device (amongst other things).

If the car is a NA spec 2003 - he will need more besides the $1k kit...if the car isn't even NA spec at all and - even worse - if it s a ROW W211 manufactured after february 2003 he is "screwed"...

greetingz,

Here it is:
https://mbworld.org/forums/showthrea...&highlight=nav

This is for a 2005 W211. Like mbenznl says, there are variations in model years which this install will not work. But either way he can do the install for you if you are not up to it youself. Check out his informative web site.

... all of which reinforces the importance of including where you live and the year/model of your car in your profile. C'mon folks, it's not hard to edit your profile, and you'll get better and more specific answers to your questions.
