Buy From Who Will Give Me Best Price or From Local Dealer Who Will Provide Service?

I have found a dealer 1 hour from my home who has worked hard to win my business and provide me with great pricing.
My question is, do I buy a car from the dealer who gives me the best price or from the dealer closest to my NYC home?
I used Edmunds and got great prices from dealers outside of the city. Buying cars from these guys seems problematic.

I am concerned about servicing the car and loaners -- i heard that if you don't buy your car from the NYC benz dealer you get put at the end of the list when you need the car serviced and forget the loaners....

Please help; your advice is much appreciated.

That all depends on how much savings you are getting. When the dealer's price is lower by THOUSANDS while the other dealer wouldn't even let me haggle, the choice was obvious.

The loaner car situation will depend on the dealer. If it's warranty work they will have to give you a car since MB is paying for it. But some dealer here will give MB loaners to people who purchased the cars there, and enterprise rentals to others.

By the way when I shopped for my car, I brought my Edmunds invoice printout for negotiation. But the dealer used carsdirect pricing which was even lower. Might want to check them out.

gadgetgirl,

The way I understand is they don't care where you bought the car from. The loaner car or service is more to do with your relationship between you and your SA. Just buy them a cofee and donut when you drop in the morning the day for your service. If you nice to them they should have no reason not nice to you :p

Thanks,
hlkc

This is not going to be terribly helpful, but it all depends on the dealers. I buy from a dealer in Southampton NY, because I have dealt with them for 20 years, trust them not to screw me, and think they have pretty good service. They are 12 miles from my weekend house and 70 miles from where I live, buy they will pick up the car when it needs service and deliver it back to me. I do not think I get the absolute best price from them, but they have been within $1000 of quotes I've gotten (just as sanity checks). How much is my time worth in not having to drop off and pick up? How much is is it worth to know they will treat me fairly on service, and not take advantage? Obviously, to me $1000 on a $60,000 car is a price I have been willing to pay. There is a dealer much closer to home that I would not deal with at any price -- sort of the opposite. The point is, I'd rather have the selling dealer service if the convenience factor can be dealt with via pickup/delivery. To me it all boils down to who do you trust? Maybe the fact that I have been a loyal customer for a long time contributes to the good treatment, but it is nice to see loyalty can actually work two ways.

Buy only based on PRICE. Take care of your SA with a $20 when you drop off the car (every time) & you'll be treated like a king!
