How many keys?

How many keys did you guys get with your car at delivery? I got a pair of smartkeys and that was it. My wife's old bimmer had like 4 keys: 2 regular, 1 without the flashlight, and one plastic one like the AAA credit card keys.

Two Smartkeys seems to be it. I know what you mean about multiple BMW keys, but that's not the W211 way.

You might say that you got four keys with your W211, because of the metal keys embedded in the Smartkeys. The metal keys will open the doors and trunk, but will also set off the alarm. They could be used as a "non-valet key" (i.e., the key you don't give to the parking valet) to separately lock the trunk on early W211s, but M-B has deleted that feature. They will still lock the glove box.

Right. Is it true that MB has deleted the manual trunk lock feature? If so it's a bad move. I use mine on my '03 E500 all the time since I valet it often.

The metal key is now only useful for the glovebox in the U.S. The former Valet function for the trunk has been deleted in the U.S.

The story is that it's a matter of liability where it's possible someone might be locked in the trunk and can't get out if the trunk is double locked.

Just another reason why tort reform is desperately needed in the U.S.

In the past, Mercedes owners got four keys as well including one for your wallet, two master keys and one Valet key.

Two keys. That's the norm. Having bought a number of cars from the same dealer, they always give me a third master key as a courtesy, and its always part of the deal I strike. But if you don't ask you don't get more than 2.

... and that's why Tony Soprano supports tort reform.

Two smart keys.

Our prior 2000 BMW 528i also had only two "smart" keys, plus the valet key.

Many other car makers still have true valet feature for trunk in their cars, for example Lexus. From other side if somebody is in trunk and can move, then a lighted button to release trunk can be easily pressed.
