Take a look at GermanCarFans or CarySpyShots sites and you will see that they have been following this car for months. It is for sure the new W221 S Class.
You are correct...I concede...:-) The thing that threw me off was the lack of fender flare. But looking at the other photos on GCF I can see that this car has the fenders well disguised with the gray stuff. The trunk, headlights and other features are too close not to be the new S Class.

w211 & w124
Okay guys, I was driving home in my ML500 loaner yesterday and just as I was turning in to my street lo and behold here comes this mystery benz and three w211 e classes right behind it. It was the exact one as in Joe's spy shots and I can GUARANTEE that it is bigger than the w211. Seeing them all together you could easily see the size difference. So I am going to conclude that it is the new S class.

Unfortunately I didn't have anything but my cameraphone and it was already dark so there's no way anything would have come out even if I did snap some shots. I will be on the lookout and next time I will just follow them all the way to their destination and take some good shots of it.

Brian should get a helmet cam (with lights) to wear at all times when near home.....don't want him to miss any more picture opportunities.
Maybe one like the sky divers wear. :p

I would find it very odd that the 2003- E class is already being re-designed.. It would be a first for MB and frankly in my opinion a big mistake. The design is great as it is and can easily make it into 2009. I miss the days when MB didn't change their body styles every 4-5 years like the American and Japanese makers do. The SL class of 1973-1988 is a good example of timeless design. Minor tweaks and that was all it got for 15 years! I'm not saying to keep the body style for 15 years, but at least 7 or 8 for Gods sake. These new designs are looking a lot like Chrysler LHS to me anyway!

Right on. I would prefer the current E styling last for 8 years before model change the R129 lasted 11 years , but the W211 is likely be a 6 year model run so we will see some changes in 09 or 2010.

freshening of exterior...

I kind of agree w/ the thought that they won't even touch the exterior of the car - have they ever done this in the past? I thought MB always keeps the same exterior (with minor changes in trim work) and then will get a new body after 8/9 years...

Autoweek June 13 edition has 4 shots of the coming S, and it looks like the pictures here. Both have strategic taping, the Autoweek car is silver. You can see the BMW 7-style trunk on both cars. The CL is also depicted in the article.

I guess what I find troubling is that even rabid enthusiasts can't figure out if it's an E- or S-class. MB needs to get a little more creative and make the different products more distinct aside from the shape of the headlamps.

Wrong. There 5506 plates are for the LA and SF regions. There are maybe 100 of those plates all over the place, as far away as Texas, and you may even see one or two in New Jersey!

And, that is the new 221 chassis. There are several of these cars driving around collecting data on the new Distronic Plus system. There may be up to 10 of those cars driving around at one time.

Hat's off to the guys who put the camo on the cars.....had a lot of you going!
