Hitting the redline...
has anyone experienced this???

sharp left turn, gun the accelerator... the rpm just rises to redline and the car doesn't go any faster (no esp issues either).

it felt like that the transmission did not engage.

car: 2004 E500 7-speed.

The first thing that comes to mind is that you've unloaded the left rear wheel by turning left and are spinning that wheel. This can happen with little or no tire squeal. Our CDI is quite prone to this with its massive low-speed torque. However, the traction control will almost instantly intervene and reduce power.

Do you have your traction control disabled when this happens?
