Question Replacing Windshield 2003 E320, Dealer or Glass Guy?

I need to replace the windshield on my 2003 E320. Should I have the dealer do this or can a quality glass company do the job?

The dealer's labor quote is too high for Allstate to pay 100%. The dealer says that is because the windshield is connected to the SRS air bag system. My insurance agent says it's because they farm out the work and add labor to make some money. Who's telling the truth?

Thx S.

While you wait for more responses, use the Search function. Just search the term windshield.

I'm sure you can find other information about this by searching, but let me say this. You have two different problems here. First of all, the windshield is NOT connected to the SRS system!!! That is ridiculous. If they actually stated that, I would have huge reservations with having my car fixed there. However, it is true that the window bags run close to the area where they will be working on the windshield - maybe that's what they were trying to communicate. However, that would not cause any increase in price.

Secondly, not all dealers do thier own glass work. Many farm it out - so in that case you would be better off to find someone for yourself. I would not recommend either.

Thirdly, the insurance company's only concern is to cut costs. This means using a cheap **** glass company that may use a factory windshield, however I guarantee that they are going to use a cheap adhesive. Not what should be used on your MB. The insurance company is going to pay around $20 for the adhesive from wherever. The correct MB adhesive is much more than that - but they don't want to pay.

Stick to your guns. Find a dealer that will do the work themselves and demand that your insurance company pays them what they charge.
