E320CDI vs E350 brake calipers

I just noticed that on my '05 CDI and on my '06 E350 (that my mom has in CA) the brake calipers look different. Her's look better, and say Mercedes Benz on them, while mine look kind of generic... is there an actual difference in them, or is it all cosmetic?

Can the '06 brakes be installed on an '05? I rather like the way they look better.

The one with MB logo is the four piston break system. The regular one is two piston break system.

E350 Brake Calipers

The initial batch of E350's were produced with the following brake configuration:

Front - 13.0" ventilated - 4 piston fixed calipers
Rear - 11.8" ventilated - single piston floating calipers

Sometime after June or July they started to ship with the same brake configuration as the CDI:

Front - 12.3" ventilated - single piston floating calipers
Rear - 11.8" solid - single piston floating calipers
I assume that this was all part of a cost cutting initiative by MB.

I was also told by MB that, due to the design of the AWD system, all 4 Matic versions of the E class are produced with the single piston front calipers. I raised this very question when I took delivery of my E350 4 Matic and noticed that the front calipers used a single piston.

Good luck,

Steve

interesting...

And the just announced 2006 sport package upgrades all routers to drilled style with MB logo calipers (per their website - there's a pic).

I remember reading a thread about the "cheap" breaks they used in the E350... and I always thought mine seemed different. Maybe thats why... mine have the MB logo.

Interesting

Is this part of the decontenting? Or were there problems with the 4 piston ones?

Which are better brakes?

The 4 piston calipers are a higher performance brake and, given their design, are more expensive to manufacture. They are, BTW, standard on the E500.

Then you can upgrade E brakes to:

E55 (Direct bolt on) (18' AMG or 19')
8 pistons front
4 pistons rear

SLK 55 (Are they direct bolt on?) (18')
6 pistons front
4 pistons rear ?

Best Regards.

Our E350 is a 9/05 build, has the single piston w/ 17" wheels. To answer AJU_350's question, I believe the 17" wheels were used starting in June. What's the build date on your car? Your's could be one of the few w/ 17" and 4 piston

Thumbs down

I'm sorry but they don't fit.

I have buy the brakes of the SLK AMG and they don't fit.

1.- Backing plates needs to be cut or changed to SLK ones, you can bend them but it's not enought.

2.- Disc holes for bolts on SLK are 13mm because wheel bolts are 12mm; in E disc holes for bolts are 15mm because wheel bolts are 14mm. So you have to make the 13 mm bolts larger to 15mm so the wheel bolts can enter.

3.- The SLK discs are more to the outside than the E ones, then the caliper is too much inside. You have to do new caliper mounting brackets so you can center the callipers with the disc.

4.- Calipers touch 2 mm the suspensión arm. Maybe this is only on airmatic's, but you have to sand 3mm the inside corner of the calliper.

I don't see the way they can fit without big modifications. Are you sure your friend put the SLK discs on a E? I know they are compatible the SLK and CLK, but it's sure that they aren't with E.

Now the problem will be manufacturing new mounting brackets.

Best Regards.

You also cannot put rear SLK/CLK 55 brakes because:

CLK/SLK 55 Rear calipers are leading and E55 rear calipers are trailing.

Best Regards.

I finaly succed to install SLK 55 FRONT + E55 REAR.

E55 REAR are plug and play.

SLK55 Front need a lot of work.

Best Regards.
