E55 Dyno

I just had my car Dyno'd today for the first time. I have a RennTech ECU and pulley, and I don't have "pre-mod" numbers, sorry folks. The guys that did the runs had a problem with the car shifting at about 5600 rpm, it never got to redline at 6200 rpm. Thus, the graph drops off at 5600, and I don't think my numbers are good. Does anyone know why this is happening? Do these guys maybe just not know how to run up my Beast properly? If you look at the numbers, the max. Torque numbers are pretty low, too. It was hot (102 degrees), humid (30%), and sea-level (Jacksonville, FL).

By the way, I visited the Brumos dealership also today, and they were prepping the first SLR to arrive in town, so I got a close-up look. Very sweet. Black with red leather interior. Wish I could get side pipes like that for my E55!!

Naa.. don't worry about it.. Renntech also dyno'd my CDI after they tweaked it.. and before for reference. The car wants to shift at a 2-300 rpm before redline (in my case 4700RPM) for safety I think.. there was nothing they could do about it.

before the ECU upgrade I had 150hp at the rear wheels, and 300 ft/lb torque.. after it was 171 and 341. Best $1300 I ever spent.

great looking car btw.. Must get a lot of looks!

OBlax4,

Definitely make sure you put the car in dyno mode just before doing the test. There is a post on here (from myself and others) on how to do that.

Also, they should use manual mode and work their way up to 4th gear easily and smoothly (no high rpm rev'ing), then when they are in 4th gear once they hit 3500 rpm's they should push the pedal to the floor in a smooth semi-quick motion. If the car downshifts then let it but just keep the pedal to the metal.

I would think you should be getting 450+ hp at the wheels with a pulley and ecu upgrade. I got 391 hp at the wheels before my mods, then 483 hp at the wheels after my mods (crankshaft and pulley and ecu upgrade). I have recently switched everything to a Kleemann K2 setup, but have yet to dyno my car, but still expect 480+ hp at the wheels.

Your temperature numbers were similar to mine (107 degrees), but my humidity was slightly higher so there must be something up with their ability to test the vehicle or whoever installed the mods. Even without an ecu update you should see better numbers.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Darren

Thanks, Darren. I will find your post on "dyno mode", and I'll take it back and have them do it again. So, it sounds to me like you think the dyno guy didn't run the car properly. No chance, then, that this was the speed limiter kicking in?

Nice car. I don't want to be a party pooper but unless you have previous track runs, you'll never know what kinda gains you are getting. IMO, dynos are only good for pre and post comparisons for tuning. And they must all be on the same dyno. If you have some previous track times, then you will have some comparisons. Dynos simply vary too widely to be able to compare to other folks dyno sheets.

Thanks for your thoughts, Derek. I don't plan on taking my car to the track (afraid I'd meet up with you!!). I just wanted to have some dyno data for my own knowledge and in case anyone asks what the car puts down.

By the way, I saw that video awhile back of your speedometer while you were running on that closed / empty road (in Georgia?). Awesome!

I agree - you should be over 440 rwhp at least. If you drove your car to the dyno shot and it was hot then you could be down some power on the dyno. But most stock E55 dyno sheets I have seen, including my own were over 410 rw hp. So try to dyno your car when its cold. If it does not make any more power than you have now then you should contact Renntech and get it fixed.

Darren - whatever happened to your local shop that was going to build you some headers for a really cheap price?

Thanks for the reply. I talked to George at RennTech yesterday, and he assured me my mods. were done correctly. He also mentioned the heat issue, and I WAS driving the car around for about an hour in hot weather before the dyno, so I'm sure it was hot. Plus they only had one crappy fan blowing on the front end during the test. I'm learning more about this as I go. I am going to wait until the weather cools down a little before trying it again. George also told me to call him from the dyno shop and he'll have one of his guys talk my dyno guy through the way they do their runs at RennTech. So, I think I had a couple issues:

1. hot engine
2. dyno guys weren't too astute
3. car wasn't in dyno mode
4. I was too uninformed to make sure 1-3 was fixed up!

Thanks, everybody!

Dude, you MUST race that car. I cannot tell you how much you will enjoy blowing away Cobras, ZO6's, and Camaros. It was be sinful to mod that beast into such perfection and to not go to the track. Come on, we'll meet up in Gville or something.

Derek - have you had any transmission problems since you started running sticky tires and nos at the track? i am thinking about running a small shot of nos but dont want to pay for new transmissions. let me know if you dont mind, thanks.
