2003 E-500 P245/45R -17 Replacement Tire Reommendations

I have about 18,000 miles on my 2003 E-500 P245/45R-17 95H Continental Touring Contact OEM tires and need to replace them soon. I checked the Tire Rack and they give the Pirelli P Zero Nero M&S tire good overall reviews and rank it as a Best Seller. However, one reviewer with a car identical to mine (non Sport 2003 model), gave the Pirelli's a poor review, saying they tracked bad on grooved roads (which we have here). A local installer in a BMW-MB tire shop says he doesn't like any Pirelli tires and only recommends Michellins

Other Tire Rack reviewers knocked several of the Michelin possible replacements in my size. I sent a note to Luke at Tire Rack and also left him a voice mail to get his thoughts but never heard from him so perhaps he is no longer supporting this forum.

I'd appreciate any forum members experience with the Pirelli P Zero Nero's on their E-500's and/or your specific recommendations for replacement tires.

I have P Zero Neros and have about 12,000 miles on them. They're fine tires. Good handling good tread wear (so far). Not too bad in snow if you want all season. I have 05 Appearance Package E500, which came with summer tires (Michelin), which I removed because I wanted high performance all season so as to avoid having to change seasonally.

Thanks for the quick feedback. I also need an all season tire as we frequently go to Colorado and the California mountains and drive in snow. Unless I get some negatives from other members, I think I'll go with the Pirelli's.

P-Zero Neros on my SLK350

I switched the Summer Contis that came on the SLK350 to All Season P-Zero Nero M+S tires. After 4,200 miles I am very happy with the Pirelli tires and at this point I plan to use them on my E500 4matic when the Conti Touring tires are worn out. I will be interested in *your* review of the tires.

They are $140 each at Tire Rack and shipping is $40 for me; however, that will depend on where you live. Installation costs are in the $25-$40 per tire depending on installer. I am not impressed by some of the Tire Rack recommended installers.

At America's Tire here in Sourhtern CA, you can get them for $147 each and installation is only $10 per tire. This month you can get a certificate for a $50 rebate at America's Tire for Pirelli's if you buy four but that appears to vary by area.

I have the P Zero Nero's and am pleased. I drive hundreds of miles a week through PA, OH, MD and VA and they have been flawless. I probably have 10,000 miles on them. Can't speak to the wear yet but tirerack suggested that they wear well. I would definitely go with them and would never buy another continental...

Thanks for the input. I will be buying the P Zero Nero's soon and let you know how I like them after I get some miles on them.

Continental Extreme Contacts

I put these on my last E430 and now on my E500. Great for all-weather and definitely the right price. Look at the reviews on the Tirerack as well as their ratings. That was what lead me to them in the first place.

We put Falken ST115 Summer Tires on our car (245/40-18). Excellent handling (Compared to Bridgestone S03 and RE050). At least as quiet as stock. And the ride on 18" wheels was not much different than 16" wheels.

So I would recommend them. However, Tire Rack, ignoring my prodding, doesn't carry them. I ended up getting them from Discount Tire Direct.

They are cheap...err...inexpensive. 285/40-18s cost $125/tire, $516 delivered for 4.

I say, if you're not changing wheel size, you should stick with the michelin stuff that came with the car.

Well the thing with that is that sometimes dealers will change out the tires and stuff.

Personally, I live and die by Tirerack's suggestions, especially if you've looked at the tires specificially for your car and read the reviews. Are there any Michelin PS2's in your size?

BTW: Luke often vists the forums, it's just he gets so busy sometimes.

I got the Pirelli P-Zero Nero's installed this week at the America's Tire near me and am very pleased with them so far. Much quieter, smoother and better turning grip than my OEM Continentals. They track well on grooved freeways and have no tendancy to pull right or left as some of the Michelin's are alleged to do. Hope they also do well on wet roads and in the snow.

I was very impressed by the Americas Tire Store. They had a $50 discount on purchase of four, bringing the cost per tire to under $135 and they only charge $10 per tire for install and lifetime rotation and balance. In addition, they use a hand torque wrench - set precisely to each vehicles recommended torque for all of the lug bolts. I had a problem with an earlier model E-320 when I bought tires at the MB dealer and they over torqued the lug bolts. At a later service when I wanted them rotated, several lug bolts broke when they tried to remove. They then had to drill the broken ones out and retap. They did this at their expense; BUT it made me aware of the need to avoid over torquing any bolts or nuts on Mercedes.
