CDI heritage question

I know it was introduced stateside in the 2005 model year, but how long has the current I6 CDI been in use in its current from, minus any minor changes to meet U.S. emissions. Thanks in advance.

Best regards

I was told the OM648 engine has been in use for about 3 years. I think the block it's self dates back quite a bit further however. Someone correct me.

except for the blurb at the end, seems like most of the CDI info on the net is about the V6.. which is odd since you can't even get it here in the US.

The I-6 is in my view a better motor from a long term standpoint. I can't see an aluminum block handling 18:1 compression as well as iron over the long term. nor is a V6 superior to an I6 in anyway except for cost/size.

I completely concur with regards to the I6 vs. V6 issue, however I thought that the '06's were going to be the V6. Hence why I didn't order a '06 and had the dealer locate my '05. I wouldn't drive an MB with a V6, I'm sure it's a great engine, but if there not inline it's a deal-breaker for me.

I had head for '07, but that is all contingent on the new Diesel being available.. and the cost of diesel is already high... can you imagine what the extra refinery costs are going to be if they do this? I personally say, screw California and NY.. and keep the I-6 and dump the stupid particulate filter concept for the US market.. The Diesels are better for the environment than Gas, isn't that enough for the damn tree huggers! (qualification: I am a quazy tree hugger.)
