Gas mileage running in E500?

Hi guys,

I am thinking to either get a E500 or E320 or ML350. I live in Bay area and gas price is around $3.30/gallon. This is coming to my cocern. I was wondering how many miles per gallon in your E500?

I would assume E320 is about same as my 03 CLK320 (Will be gone soon). I got average City/Freeway in about 22 miles/gallon based on the computer reading.

Thanks.

There have been various threads on mileage with the E500, among other W211s. You might try searching this forum under "E500 mileage MPG". FWIW, we get around 18 mpg in urban driving, with a mix of freeway and city streets, not a lot of stop-and-go. On the open road we get 23-25 mpg. That's pretty close to the EPA numbers.

If you want (close to) E500 performance, and Honda Civic milage, you have one choice.. E320CDI.. (Just add the DC Suspension / appearance package) and Leather and you're in business...

He's in the Bay area, and the Left Coast doesn't get CDIs. And what, BTW, is the DC suspension?

6 months old and 7500 miles, and you can drive a CDI..

DC is what I've been told is short for "Airmatic" suspension, which is standard on the E500, and optional on the other cars..

I'm averaging 19 and regularly get as high as 27 on the highway in my e500 (via computer)...

Can't beat the quiet, smooth power of a V8....

I'm still in the break-in period on my E500. I live in southern NH. Most of my driving is country/rural, with a few stop signs and stop lights. I've gotten 22.3 mpg since I drove it off the dealer's lot, and get 24-25 mpg on trips from where I live to down town Boston (combination of suburban stoplights and highway driving). All info is from the computer.

I have an '05 E320 4matic with 1800 miles and I average 25-26 mpg highway. I expect it to improve when fully broken in.

I've read that a broken-in engine can get 10% more power and 10% better milage.. I'm not at 4200 miles, and starting to actually feel and see that difference, though I'm told the break-in on my motor is closer to 15,000 miles..

I agree with you about the break-in, Sam. I have an '05 E320 gas. Nearing 5,000 miles and in the last 1500 miles or so, I've noticed the engine loosening up and the power/torque increasing a bit. Wonder how much more/better it will be, but it has surprised me by improving. It's been 15 years since I purchased a new car, so I guess I didn't realize....

As for mileage, I get between 20 and 26, depending on city/highway driving. I'm a bit disappointed. I did better in my BMW 528i.

E500 4-matic mpg

After 10,000 miles my overall average is 22.8 mpg. My best (per dashboard display) was 26.5 on a 240 mile non-stop trip. I have the 4-matic 5-speed AT. I am running 32psi in all four tires. Mileage went up considerably after raising front tire pressure from 29 to 32psi. I do about 70% highway driving.

Mine is about 19 City and 22 Hwy - still only 3.5k miles and I use Chevron Super unleaded only. What brand of gas is everyone using? I heard Chevron is the best.

my 05' 500 4matic mpg

is pretty much 20mpg combined w/ 50% hwy, 50% around town.

HOW CAN YOU BEAT 300+HP, V8, AWD, and getting 20MPG!!!!!!!!

Also - how is it the EPA rating on this car is so screwed up requiring a gas guzzler tax. I always hear about cars not giving anywhere near the EPA rating, but this car consistantly gives ABOVE the EPA rating, particularly with hiway miles.

maybe MB is pocketing the guzzler tax - some conspiracy theorist out there check the govt list of cars paying the tax :v

If that 286hp V6 they slapped into the E350 is any indication, MB is working on just that in their next generation V8.. Rumor is 388hp and same milage..

Front tire pressure factor

Try raising the front tire pressure to 32psi the next time you fill up the tank. I prefer the handling on the car since I am running 32psi on all four tires. I am due for my second tire rotation in a few weeks. So far it looks like I am getting very good mileage on the tires too.

Average 20MPG (19-21MPG) on my 30 mile trip to work, no highway but some 50/55MPH back roads between towns. The main difference is due to traffic lights, busy night and hit all the lights it can be in the 18s, coming back late at night with no traffic and making most of the lights and I've seen over 22. Highway trip I have seen 25MPG even in the North East (the E500 eats up the miles on the Merritt and Hutch parkways)

I agree with others, if you want mileage buy the CDI. In fact if you don't need AWD (I have WinterSports and had no problem this past winter between PA and NJ) or the bells and whistles not allowed on it, buy the CDI. I may eventually trade in for one and I am waiting for the CDI in the wagon or R for my wife.

I understand the CDI will be available in Wagon for '07, but it will be the V6 version, not the current I6... supposedly even more efficient, and with same level of torque from a V6..

The E500 is a cooler car, but the CDI is more "practical" ... I'd like one of each in an ideal world.

If you are interested in the AMG version, I get about 21 on the highway and 12-16 in town, depending on my driving habits.
