Keyless Go - another opinion request
I'm ordering a new R-Class and I really like the Keyless Go concept, but i'm pretty techy/geeky, and my wife will be primary driver.
Is there anyone out there who has this option on their vehicle who regrets it? Or who wouldn't order it again?
I'm just not sure that my wife will like this feature... while it's meant as a convenience feature, the manual does make it seem confusing sometimes and I can just see her saying to me "why the heck can't there just be a key like a normal car?"
Anyone have issues with spouses who just hate the system and regret ordering it? Issues with giving the car to a valet or a guest driver? Other "acceptability" problems? Confusions on when or why the vehicle locks/unlocks/starts/doesn't start?
Thanks for opinions...
I have no problems with Keyless Go, it works as advertised and it makes life just a bit less hectic.
Keyless go (KG) is not as complicated as it may seem. The key fob is like any other key fob, it has a button for lock, unlock, trunk and alarm. Your wife will probably not have issues with any of those functions.
The nifty aspect of KG is starting the car, which is achieved by pressing the break pedal and pushing the start/stop button on the shift knob. To turn the car off, press the start/stop button while the car is in "Park".
There ARE other functions provided with KG which may entertain YOU, but, as far as your wife is concerned, that's all she really needs to know. If she gets curious about the other stuff, you can always show them to her.

PS This option works as advertized (unlike many other MB gee-whiz electronic features, as long as the brake pedal is pressed down hard enough.) Only once in a while do I get the message "Key Not Recognized" (maybe my key is buried too deeply in my pocket, but the car starts anyway.) I'd definitely order it every time... it does freak out car wash guys & valet guys when I forget to restart the car with a key before giving it to them, so there's no key in the running car's ignition switch! ...Its always better to remember to use the key when you go to the car wash, or when there will be a valet involved.
Your wife will like the feature as it permits a quick entry into the car in a dark or lonely parking lot.

I guess this has been debated elsewhere, but I'm very surprised that they never tied in keyless go with memory seat/mirror functions so that the car adjusted seats/mirrors as the relevant driver's keyfob is recognized as they approach the car. That would be awfully nice...

I know for a fact that my seats adjust differently, as well as climate control last use settings depending on whether I start with the key or with keyless and also which key I use to start with... so these systems at least ,are tied in with the keyless go option and to specific keys. (as long as you activate the key specific option in settings)

The fact of the matter your wife is being careless either way. I'm sure she wouldnt leave a bottle of tranquilizers around a child even if the bottle had a "child proof" lid, because the child MIGHT be able to open the bottle anyway.
Even if a child started the car with a key (while playing in the attached garage) your greater worry would be killing the entire family with carbon monoxide, because the car idles so quietly.
...anyway, KG is a convenience, and no additional risk than a key left in the car.

Right now, our daughter is 3, and she's not tall enough to reach the thumb latch for the lock on the garage door. Once she can, however, we'll start locking the lock that requires a key to get INTO the garage as well (we installed this lock for future use and to keep occasional workmen out of the garage). Of course, that leaves open the question of where we should keep the key so that she can't get at that and then use it to unlock the door into the garage. And the carbon monoxide risk you mentioned is precisely what I was concerned about.
FYI, I installed a digital touchpad lock into our master bathroom, where all our medicines are kept, and we always lock that door. Last week, we noticed our daughter had managed to climb onto the bathroom vanity in another bathroom and remove some Band Aids from the medicine cabinet above it. Regardless of whether you leave your car key in a pocketbook or elsewhere, it's hard to keep it out of reach of a child yet not create a great inconvenience to yourself.
Ah.. life with rugrats.. Our house is a virtual wonderland of child proof technology.. don't get me started on the 1000's we spent on all of that. But then for those little monsters, it's all worth it! :p
1. Loves not digging in purse to find keys. (Finger nail polish lasts longer)
2. Hates annoying beeping everytime you get out of car. (For the last time, I'm not going to forget my key!)
Bottom line - get it! Even if she doesn't like it, she can just use the key as a regular key.
1) It will always "beep" with the drivers door open when you have your key
2) I don't believe "keyless go" can be ordered on the R-Class yet.

Seattle, it happens. Any thoughts on whether KG is a good, can be a
negative feature....or six of one---half dozen other, no reason to fret?

If you get carjacked and the key is in your pocket, simply step out of the car. They'll get a few blocks away and the car will go into a limp mode and eventually will go no further. They can't steal it, and you're at a safe distance calling the cops.
This all assumes the potential car thief is unfamiliar with KG or is in such a rush to drive away fails to consider it.
Nevada Jack: did you get your R500?

Hope you are well and the stable is running well.
