Sunroof (baffle?)

Has anyone noticed this with their sunroof TILTED up?

The rear end of the rubberized accordion has separated from the sunroof as depicted on the left side of the sunroof or the material has started to split as depicted on the right side of the sunroof.

I would like to hear also from the members in the warmer areas of the country, such as Scottsdale AZ ect.

The question is:

Do you think that the dealer will say this is "normal wear and tear" or do you think that I would be covered under the warranty?

How could this be normal wear and tear? My 14 year old 300E has no problem like this. I'd ask to have it repaired under the warranty.

IT IS NOT NORMAL WEAR AND TARE.. it's broken, get it fixed. IT's that simple.

I looked at quite a few used MB's from '03 etc.. and don't recall seeing any kind of damage like that.

Yes! Originals tore in less than a year and were replaced under warranty @ 14229 miles. No problems since. I don’t think you’ll have any problems but if need be I’ll be happy to forward a copy of my invoice.

Mike, you know how it works by now – one hand washes the other and both hands wash the face.

Just another example of cost cutting. I'm so disappointed in the current crop of cars that I'm tempted to keep driving the 300E for another 14 years (if only I'd live that long ).

Just a little postscript: Does anyone have the current S-Class and if so is the quality any better than the W211?

I for one am dying to go sit inside and possibly test drive a new S.. I am expecting a lot for the $10,000 price increase.

Sam, you should pick up a current W220 at the end of their run. You might save some money and get a more reliable car in the process.

BTW, I think you'll find that it'll cost quite a bit more than a $10K bump over your CDI. An S-430 with Lighting and CD has an MSRP of $79,705 while a CDI with Lighting and Premium has an MSRP of $55,765. Of course you could get the S-350 with the 3-valve 3.7 liter V6 for less money but it would be underpowered.

I meant $10,000 over the W220... I know it's a good 35K+ over the W211... But while I agree the later run W220's "may" be more reliable.. I don't like the idea of paying that kind of money for a car that's about to go out of production. I would much prefer to pick up a 2006 used a couple of years later or something.

Yep, if you tilt your sunroof up/down everyday (like I do), it takes no time tear off these pieces.

From 96 on, Mercedes moved away from the fabric (last forever), and use the rubber accordion. It's not really cost, more of matter of wind buffer when the roof is tilt off.

It's easy to replace though, I just replace mine. $40 in part (both side), and 10 min job. Slide the sunroof about 2 inches, use a flat-head screw driver and ply open the plastic panel at the front of the sunroof (do it from the front, go easy, since they held into sunroof via couple plastic lock). Close the sunroof, tilt it up, and pull these two rubber piece, snap new one in, and finish the job.

Do not understand why you had to pay. Are you out of warranty? Never mind the wear and tear, if it tears it should be considered a defective part - it's not a maintenance issue. BTW the tilt is also used on my car eveyday.

CaptnMike:

Same problem on my 03' W211. Just brought it to the dealer and it is being replaced under warranty. Also, I noticed the plastic facing on the speedo is starting to show some "foggy" blotch like marks. Going to mention to the dealer as well.

I don't have anything like that on mine. Should I be worried that they fell out while I was driving?

I agree with BudC.... I feel that the quality of my 92 is far superior to the 06 as far as the base car interior and structure.
Although I will say that the 06 is sure a nice ride.

Hell....

I do not believe so. My copy states: "Battery Module MBZ2005060008
Illogical Messages in Instrument Cluster. Battery Control Module May Report Charge Level As Good When The Actual Level May Be Insufficient. Flash BCM If Needed. BCM May Have To Be Replaced And Reflashed. Repair May Be 1 Thru 4. See Recall"

It's my W210 that I replaced (out of warranty), however, as I took off the part, I realize they're identical to my W211
