Windshield defogger

When I turn on my front defogger the fan speed goes on high and air is directed to the dashboard windshield vents as it does on any car....but then the air becomes super hot as if the heat is on max. I can see how this helps in the winter but in the spring or fall when you just want to rid some condensation it's just way too hot. I thought with auto climate control the car should be smart to know what temperture to use. Dealer says all cars are like this....I have to resort to turning on the AC to dehumidify...Is there something wrong with my car or all your cars this same way?

Isn't your 300SE the same way? As far back as I can remember, all the MBs that I have had that had automatic climate control have always turned on the HEAT and the FAN on HIGH along with changing the vents to the windshield. I think that Mercedes is thinking that when you hit that button you need the windshield defrosted ASAP! and that is what it does.

I too found this quite annoying when I lived in Florida and the last thing I wanted was HOT air! With the W124 this was a constant battle, but with this W211 I override the AUTO mode and then I make the air come out partially out of the windshield and part out of the normal vents, then I regulate the fan speed and the temperature on both front zones. I also make sure the A/C compressor is on. This works very well on my car in any weather. I just had to do this for the last 3 days since we got belted with snow here.

I don't know if this helped, but I hope it did,

Steve

The S-class defoggs in a near similar way, just not brutally hot. They should change the icon for the defogger to show an iced windshield, that's all it's good for. I guess I will just have to rely on the auto setting with the airconditioning controlling the humidity and dew point in the cabin.
