W211 tire and wheel fitment

Please help.

Helping my friend to pick up a set 18" wheels. What is the right offset for 18X8.5 all the way around? ET35 or 38mm? What about the tire size (Non-staggered)? 245/40ZR18?

Thanks in advance.

First, I assume the tires/wheels are going onto a W211 M-B.

The closest Mercedes recommendation is for an 18x8J EH2 wheel that's OE with the sport package. This wheel has a 30mm offset. They recommend the 245/40 x 18" tire size that carries a 97Y XL service rating (the XL designates "extra load").

FWIW, I put a set of BBS 18"x8" wheels on our CDI a couple of months ago. The wheels have a 35mm offset. The Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3 tires are 245/40x18 93Z rated. They fit fine and there's no adverse effect on the steering from the non-standard offset that I can discern. The "93" service rating is somewhat lower than M-B recommends, but is still more than adequate at 1433 lb/tire, considering the car will never be cruised at anywhere near the 150 mph speed rating of the tires.

If you haven't already, I'd go to the Tire Rack web site and do some research. In my experience, if Tire Rack says a wheel/tire combo will work on a particular car, it's likely that it will. I'd guess if you keep the offset in the range of 30-35mm, you'll be OK, but don't sue me if I'm wrong <G>.

Finally, if your friend's car is currently running its original "green" tires, be prepared to see fuel consumption increase 8% - 15%, based on my experience and the experience of another poster on this board.

Good luck.
