Liguatronics appointment made.

Well, I'm taking the plunge, and will be a Guinea pig of sorts on this Linguatronics add on.. I'm doing it w/o the phone. The retail price of the unit is $525 (Steve also can get it for same price).. and the dealer wanted 2hrs labor, but I reasoned with him for a 1 hr fee.

He's not sure it's going to work w/o the phone, but everything I've been told is that it will. So monday morning I'll find out and post my experience with it in this thread.

My only comment is this however.. if indeed it's only a $525 add on, why the heck wasn't it just made as standard on all W211's with COMAND? I mean, surely they could have done it as for a cost of less than $250 per unit, and even passed it on thru the retail price w/o anyone complaining..

we'll see..

The linguatronic has voice features for the audio system...so it SHOULD work without the phone. In fact I remember reading a post (here somewhere I think) where a member was using voice control with no phone installed. However, the linguatronic does not change stations when in SAT radio mode....

except in your case, you are dealing with a Rest Of World car that is NOT prewired, that does not have the VR switch on the steering wheel column and that might not even have a microphone (I forgot wether your car has a phonesystem or not) - meaning that there is no way that the VR kit can be installed for anywhere close to that 600USD.

Sam, just be glad that MBUSA prewires all their cars for VR and also be glad that MBUSA offers the VR kits at 525USD as well...the UK VR module by itself already costs 525USD and that does not include the rest of the parts required for installation in a pre wired car.

greetingz,
I am Steve, believe me I am, but check this email out that I got from the other dealer when I contacted about this Mod.. He apparently contacted MBUSA directly about it and got this reply (keep in mind, DCX already emailed me with the idea of adding Linguatronics)... Just goes to prove my point further about MBUSA.

Mr Sam,

Here is the reply I received in regards to your request. The only hands
free function offered here in the US is for use with the phone, it does
not offer voice control of the radio functions.

It doesn't seem like this technology is planned to be offered in the US
yet. Also, MBUSA cannot prematurely offer future inofmrtaion that may or
may not come to fruition.

Makes me wonder The Andrew Webb fella had attached a copy of my email reply from DCX where they tell me that LIGUATRONICS IS STILL AN OPTION TO CONTROL THE COMAND!!!

Anyway... the appointment is set, and with Mark C, and SunMan, and Steve all saying it should work (As my car does have the pre-wire COMAND/stock nipple, etc.), I'm talking the risk.. I assume they'll have to version code my car, but I'm hoping they'll be able to handle it w/o the phone is all.

Last visit with my shop foreman, when he coded the IC for radio searches (menu choice fort frequency or presets scans) he also suggested Liguatronics. It was afternoon and didn’t want to fight the traffic on the 101 therefore didn’t discuss it in detail. Haven't talked to him since. Can everyone suggesting this install be wrong?

I think now you are catching on Dan... my point exactly , and yet you see what the "official" word from back east is.. Anyway.. Steve, Sunman, and others who have said it will work have several orders of magnitude more credibility for me than MBUSA on these cars and what will and will not work.

VR will work 100% - as long as the microphone array is hooked up properly (several different connectors available for that for which the connections depend on wether the car has a phone or not...and once it does have a phone, the position of both the phone and the VR module in the fiberring become extremely important)...no doubt there - we already did several VR installs without a phone system.

greetingz,
Thanks Steve, as always super helpful.

So I wonder if the dealer will have the proper mic. array.

Do those come separately from the $525 unit? Is there a part #, or will the be included in that box? I need to give these guys as much info as possible, as you can imagine they probably have never done a non-telephone install.

the mic array is already in your car but the wires have to be arranaged properly in order for the vcs module to "hear" your voice. I am sure the dealer would know this. I hope.....

And there lies the rub.

If the dealer's tech had 1/2 the know how of you or Steve, I would be completely at rest, and just show up and drop off the car. Alternatively, I'm having to interview people on here, and then take all of this info to the dealer on Mon, and baby sit them while they work on my car, incase they try to come out and say "we couldn't get it to work because..."

sam, the different mic array connectors in the trunk are labelled - shouldn't be a problem at all - have some faith in your techs

Quick overview of the Voice Control System (VCS). Capability to control Telephone (optional), radio, CD Changer, and single CD player via your spoken commands. However, does not function with SIRIUS Satellite Radio and MP3-CDs.

Do not ask for pricing on a US based forum when you have a non US spec car - whatever it costs in the US (which is posted in this thread) is not applicable to you...you have a Rest Of World spec car and those are not prewired for VR...be prepared to pay 3 times as much...just to get VR added.
