I have been testing the MPG my US CDI has been getting lately and I was wondering what kind of milage others were getting. I do most of my driving in a rural area and average about 27 mpg.

you should post this in the diesel forum, so all of those gas guzzling E500's and E350's don't have to read this...

seriously... I got a record 40mpg at 66mph
but my average is 29 for city / freeway mix.

I've put 3,500 miles on mine since mid-September.
I estimate a 40% Highway, 60% City mix.
My computer shows 28 mpg as the average for the 3,500 miles.

For City, I've averaged 26-27 mpg.
For the short haul mix, I see 30 mpg.
For highway, I get 35 to 38 mpg, and I drive 85 mph anytime I can.

Just today, I travelled from Denver to Colorado Springs, and back.
My average for the cumulative 130 miles was 38 mpg.

This is good because we're still getting screwed with diesel fuel prices; .50 per gallon higher than premium petrol in much of the Denver area.

This is also good because this car has such sweet torque.
On the highway, I just leave it in 5th and let the torque shove me from 70 to 90 very quickly. I'm vaguely recalling downshifting in my past . . . .

Although, most of your driving is rural, you may want to specify for the poll if this is an overall MPG for all types of driving, city, or hwy. Hand calculated or computer calculated. Mine never differed more that a 4% between the two.

I made a trip to Arizona last month, and saved all of my fuel receipts. In almost 3000 miles of highway driving between 70 and 80 MPH with the A/C on and using cruise control 90% of the time, I got 37.72 MPG.

The onboard computer had calculted my average speed at 61 MPH (I had a small amount of city driving in Phoenix) and showed only 35.6 MPG.

You won't know your true fuel economy unless you do the math yourself. Some trip computers are spot-on and some will miss high or low by several MPG

Agreed. Mine has tended to show a lower mpg, by about 1-2 mpg, than I calculate using the old fashioned fill-up/tripmeter/calculator method.

I get good gas mileage in my E350. Maybe cuz I drive it like a grandma, but it seems to be around 27mpg. Thats awesome compared to my G. Even all freeway driving and I swear the G doesn't get better than 20mpg.

Go to the W211 forum and post a comparison of your G35 with your E.. I'm sure many would be interested in your take on these two competitive cars..

Also, is your 27mph highway? or all around? Cause the best I can get on my E350 is 21 all around (norther california driving).

I would say its a mix of both, but I think the only "street" driving is getting to the freeway. I usually drive it to work once a week from Temecula to San Diego. So its about 55 miles on the freeway each way. I have only done short tests with half tanks or so... tripmeter/gas amount. I'll probably get a more accurate estimate in a week or so, when I run down a full tank.

I cruise about 75 or so and never really get on it. I'm sure that helps a bit.

that makes sense then, cause if you did a lot more city driving and got 27mpg, I would wonder if you weren't really in a CDI?

Even with my 75 year old mom driving, literally like a granny, we're seeing 20-21 on the E350 with mixed use. The best I could get on it while on the freeway (by reseting the computer and watching it for 10 miles) was an average of 29mpg @70, which is pretty damn good for a gas car weighing close to 2 tons.
