Rotating tires on 4Matic

I have same size tires all around on my E500 4Matic. I rotate the tires every 5,000 miles. I am fairly certain that if I did not rotate the tires the rear tires would wear out noticeably quicker. MB calls for a 29 PSI in the front and 34 PSI in the rear. I keep the pressure closer to 32 PSI all around.

How critical is it to rotate tires on the 4Matic and what impact does the air pressure differential have on the effective diameter of the tire?

05 E500 Wagon
One question, I have a E500 4matic wagon that I have been lightly searching for rims when the right deal comes. If i choose an 18 staggered rim, can I keep the diameter all the same and have the rears a little wider. I assume that the problems with 4matics is just the same diameter, is this correct? When I put my cars info into Tire Racks page it comes up with a staggered set of rims, why would they take the chance of doing this when it could cause problems?

So my actual question is, if buy a set of rims that are 18" and call for a wider and taller tire for the rear, can I put the same diameter tire on but wider in the rear without any problems?

I hope these questions are not that dumb, I'm a newbie.

Thanks for the help

It's almost impossible to to go up in width while retaining exactly the same diameter, as sidewall thickness is specified as a percentage of width. I'd say that if your cruise control is still functional after you do it, you're probably ok, as the MB cruise is programmed to only allow a very minimal variation between front and rear axle speeds before disengaging.

I have staggered AMG CLS wheels on my car... have put 7k without issue of any sort...

I think that it is important to have as close as possible the same rolling circumference ... with the sizes listed and corresponding tire pressure.. I am doing a pretty good job of staying within tolerable limits.

245/40/18 29lbs of pressure
275/35/18 36lbs of pressure these tire pressures will give me the same distance from the wheel spindle to the ground (the key factor of measurement that the computer uses to measure wheel speed irregularities)

I have noticed that some of the previous posts discuss burning up differentials and such... I would bet that a typical dodo American driver who rides around with 24lbs of pressure in one of their tires wacks out the system more than my combination.... so I am sure that the tolerances of the 4matic are wide enough to allow for the staggered setup... but be sure to use the pressures listed (they were suggested by Luke at Tire Rack)
