jerky braking...am I doing something wrong?

Maybe Im doing something wrong ...not exactly familiar with how SBC brakes work. Anyway, it seems that when I come to a rather hard (not slamming) stop, the cars movement is jerky and kind of shudders. On gradual stops, everything is smooth. Am I supposed to be doing anything special with the SBC brakes or is this something I should have checked by the dealer?

It would help us if you told us what specific model and model year car you have.

If you have a W211 from 2003, the consensus on the board seems to be that they have the worst feel and that the cars improved in subsequent years.

However, my advice to you would be to drive another car from the same model year to see if it feels the same to you. That could help you in your fact finding.

Good luck,
William

You may have a recalled vehicle...check the previous posts on here. It has been addressed by many previously. Sorry I could not provide more help, I don't have one...I just have read over and over on this forum.

SBC usually feels the opposite. In other words, they are a little sensitive when trying to stop gradually but work more normally when braking harder.

If you are braking hard enough to set off ABS, then that's what you feel. It could be made more noticeable if you are braking on slippery surfaces.

In any case, it doesn't sound right and I'd take it to a dealer to see what they say about it. Ask your dealer to make sure you have all Technical Service Bulletins installed that affect SBC.

I agree with the other poster, let us know what model and year car you are driving.

The usual knock on SBC is that it applies too much braking force too soon - that it's "grabby". "Jerky" and "shuddering" don't fit in with that. Like the others have said, something is wrong that requires a trip to the dealer.

To me, the shuddering might indicate warped rotors, unbalanced wheels or a bent wheel, especially if you had a problem with a wheel and it's on the front of the vehicle.

Do not go off and throw parts at it till you have it correctly diagnosed by a dealer.

I will definitely have the dealer check it out. But I think I may have descirbed it incorrectly. Its not so much jerkey as it is bouncy. The car feels like its wobbling slightly back and forth as it comes to a stop. Nobody really notices it unless I point it out.

Needless to say the dealer needs to check it. Question, does the steering wheel twitch at all? Also, what model and year is your car?

the year is 2003 E500. the wheel did twitch, however, I had the dealer take care of this by giving them the service bulletin. It doesnt anymore.
