Strange Storage Area on '04 E500 Wagon

Replaced my wife's '98 E320 wagon with an '04 E500 wagon. While moving "stuff" from the old wagon to the new I noticed that the '04 rear storage space is shorter in length then the E320's.

Found that the E500 has a storage compartment behind the 2nd row of seats that is accessable by bringing the 2nd row seats foward. The storage area is the width of the car but small in size. What is it for? Seems very strange. Is this standard on all '04 wagons?

I noticed that it can be removed. Is this an option?

Comments?

Just a guess but is it a place to store a retractable cargo shade when not in use? My wife has a Lexus RX330 with a shallow tray under the floor for the cargo shade.

Nice stable of cars you have there. If you ever get bored with the 'Vettes, send them my way!

I think it is standard, and it can be removed. Its one of the first things I did with my 04. Removing it provides more space for stuff. It fills the "triangle" from the upper part of the rear seat down to floor of the cargo compartment. we have a rack that fits into the storage area that slides into different configurations (it was an option in 04; don't know about 05) and it was stored in the compartment when the car was delivered.

That space has always been there. It was there on my W124 too. I thought it was a clever way of packaging something that was already used. We put all the gameboys and other stuff there to hide it from plain view when the 3rd seat is up.

It's just an extra storage area. Came standard on 05s. As mentioned above, can be removed.
