Steering noise
At idle when I turn the steering wheel I get a slight whinning sound (or a whirring sound) - or both - not sure how to explain the sound - anyone experience the same problem? I started getting this after I got the "Brake wear - visit workshop" but after changing the brake pads, the "brake wear" message disappeared and I still seem to have the steering problem. I have 25k miles on it and I wonder if I should take it to the dealer to get it checked out. It is a 2004 E-500.

I had this problem with my ’03 e320 and they found a very slight leak at the steering rack connection and replaced the rack. This solved my problem.
(1) P-B-46.30/22a APR05, NOISES FROM THE AREA OF POWER STEERING PUMP - Power steering hose check & adjust; Power steering reservoir / lower hose replace if necessary; Power steering operation, check & inspect for leaks; Power steering pump replace.
(2) P-B-46.20/16a APR05, LEAKS AT THE INTERNAL STEERING LINES OF THE CONTROL HEAD CONECTION AND/OR STEERING GEAR HOUSING – Power steering gear box/steering rack replace; Both lines – control head to steering gear housing , seal/replace if required.
