New S Class
Yesterday I went to the LA Auto Show as I wanted to see the new S class along with other new concept cars and new models.
MB had the new Maybach on display as well as the new V-8 and V-12 S class. It's clear that the new S has been influenced by the Maybach styling in the rear and by the CLS lines for the side profile of the car.
The new dash seems nice but it was not "lit up" so you couldn't play with the controls. Seating is very comfortable, front and rear with ample leg room.
My big dislike is the reduced visibility due to the curvature of the roof line. I don't personally like this in the CLS but it is more sporty looking. So, for those who put style over function it should be appealing. However, there were a number of current and previous S class owners looking at the new cars who also didn't like the styling. It wasn't just an age thing. While some of us were on the older side 60+, there were others in their 40's and 50's who didn't care for it. One young mother, said "She couldn't stand it" and would keep her current S Class indefinitely.
I also was VERY dissapointed in the third row seats in the R class. We currently have a GMC Denali SUV and have been happy with it. It can take my wife's large painting and 2x8 steel grids for shows with ease. We can also get 8 in it (as we did this Christmas) for short rides. You can only get six in the R class and the third row seats were VERY cramped and uncomfortable in my opinion.
We will be sticking with our E-500 and Denali SUV for several years.
