SYLVANIA SILVERSTAR: Will they burn/melt the headlight plexiglass?

Hi,

I used aftermarket HIDs on another car and the headlights noticed discoloration and melted plexiglass about a month later.

Who has used the SYLVANIA SILVERSTAR on a W211?

Here is the website with product info:

Ive had sylvania silverstars on my w202 for the better part of 2 months now with no problems. From what ive herd they will not discolor or melt like those cheap ebay brands. My only irk is that they dont look like HIDs, they are white but not as bright as i was told. They still are 100 times better than regular halogens.

I have had Silverstars on my W211 and R171 (hi beam) eversince I got my cars. Though I don't use the hi beam often, I haven't noticed any discoloration to any of my headlight housing. I think they are safe.

Bought a pair for my '03 E320. One bulb lasted 6 months and the other died after 9 months -- I put the stock (and reliable) Osram H7's back in. There was no discoloration of the lens from the Sylvania Silverjunk bulbs.

I sent a complaint to Sylvania and they said that they would replace the bulbs if I sent the defective ones back. I told them "not interested" and thanks anyway as I have better things to do than to change headlights twice a year. Especially the W211 where it's difficult to change the drivers side low beam due to the coolant bottle taking up most of the working space.

Good luck with your choice -- I hope your experience is better than mine!

Regards,
Paul...

I've run Silverstars on the Lexus for the past two years (low and high beams)

No issues with the Lexan/plastic whatever the covers are made of.

You want European Silverstars rather than USA Silverstars.

Osram rather than Sylvania.

Euros aren't blue and last longer.

I had them on my 02 Caddy forever. Great headlight capsule. Not xenon, but miles ahead of regular bulbs. I doubt Sylvania would make a product that would set them up for lawsuits & advertize them as equal but better replacements.

You'll like them. They're NO substitute for Bi Xenons, but they'll keep you happy 'till you buy your next car.

I have them on my W202 for the past year. No discoloration or problems. Bought them from Walmart and have yet to replace them. I think they are pretty good quality and have had other friends with similar good experience.

Glad to hear you've had good luck with them. As lkchris has pointed out, the Osram SilverStars are better which is strange since Osram now owns Sylvania. By the way, the local Walmart near me has a bunch of Sylvania SilverStars H7 two pack on their markdown area -- $30/pr.

Paul...
