MB acknowledging Transmission Problem on 7-speeds

The only issue I had with my E-500 with 7-speed transmission was, shifting from 1 to 2 to 3 always gave a jolt to the whole car. You could always feel it and feel very uncomfortable. I thought it was normal in lower gears. My friend just bought an ML350 with 7-speed and after some bitter conversation with the dealer, he got his transmission valve replaced for the same problem. Today I took my E-500 for groaning steering (at cold temp) and also got 3 recall works done. To my surprise they also corrected the transmission problem. The service manager said they replaced the transmission computer (not just a software update) which would have otherwise cost me $900. I asked if it was a chip, but he said they replaced the whole electronic module. When I drove back home and in a stop-and-go traffic my transmission did what I expected a mercedes to do in such traffic condition.

If you have this jerky feeling at lower gears you should take it to a dealer and get it checked out. Do this before your warranty expires.

Mine is a 2004 E-500 with 25k miles on it.

My Transmission Experience

On my 05 E-500, there is mild jerking when starting from cold. The condition disappears with warming in a minute or two. Never had a 2nd "jerk". Has not been serviced since purchase.

722.9 7G-Tronic Transmission

DTBs were issued as early as APR04 for varying shift quality complaints. The project is still in progress until notification of conclusion and all issues are still being tracked for continuous quality improvements. This is why all repairs must be called into EDAC (Enhanced Diagnostic Assistance Center) to receive authorization.

My tranny was worked on a couple of weeks ago. (Pan, valve body, software update.)

Shifting feels better. No "rear bumper tap" feeling when coming to a stop sign anymore, but I have noticed that very often, when I come to a stop sign full stop, and lift my foot off the brake & step on the gas to pull away, the tranny is still in the process of dropping down into 1st (very smoothly, I must admit) but the tranny is not ready for me to step on the gas to leave the stop sign so it "gently slams" into 1st on acceleration away from the sign. If I sat at the Stop sign for a longer time this would not be a noticable flaw, so I don't know whether to address the complaint or not.

This is most prevalent when cold for the 1st 2 miles or so, then either I don't care or it lessens.

I was thinking that everyone seems to have problems with the 7 speed now that it is cold. What I tried is I put my car in C mode and I didn't notice any of the shift problems when cold in this mode. When the car is warm, I put it in S and everything seems ok.

I am going in for service on Monday, what did you guys mention to them to get them to update this module on the tranmission? Rough shifting in low gears?

They know of the various problems and as such there isn't one specific fix all - just bring it in. If you must have a DTB to reference use P-B-27.60/61a NOV05, Rough Shift Quality (211 & 219) - addresses software upgrade; transmission oil level; shift adaptations; any and all mechanical causes found; and Circlip replacement.

I must have mentioned this DTB a dozen times!

"Rough downshifting into 1st as you come to a stop. Car feels as if its rear bumper was tapped by the car behind you, just as you come to a complete stop. Transmission doesn't seem to be in the right place as you come out of a turn, take your foot off the brake and apply the gas"

... I don't know that you want to make them tear apart the car for ****s & Giggles unless you really are having objectionable problems, since there really isn't a cure yet...

Yeah, I mentioned it when I called for my appt. although I am unsure if this problem will exist when it gets warmer cause it seems to just have started recently.

does anyone know if there is a similar DTB for the new ML (W164)? I am pretty sure I have the "updated" valve body, but that is about it. I do not recall any attempt at new software or a new Tranny ECU.

Thanks

Not on this particular DTB. Oddly it covers the SLK, C, CLK, E, CL, CLS, S, and SL. Worth mentioning though as it may have been revised since NOV05. When I get a chance I’ll see what’s available as far as new releases.
