BudC - I didn't know that -- looks like BMW wins again in this category .. but from what I've heard Mercedes has unlimited roadside. BMW only had 4 or 6 years (depending on warranty) but unlimited miles.
As for the X5, I really wanted one until I started reading the X5 forums. It appears they have quite a few problems.

The purchase of my X5 and E500 were done 1 month apart and my service binder for my E500 is about twice as thick as my X5's service binder. This is mainly due to warranty issues.
I know that it is pretty expensive to maintain BMW (my 3 series has expired warranty & maintenance prog) and it is costing me quite a few pennies but with this maintenance program from BMW, when I recently had to replace f&r pads and rotors on my X5 (21K miles), I was real happy.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
I got 28K out of mine, however they were squeeling for most of the time.
Cost was $1000.00 (in NY) including 4 new rotors, pads etc.
Also check the rotors as they may need replacing or touching up. IF the rotors are showing significant wear (like a ridge lip around the edge) replace them -- don't resurface them.
You can also check out some indys as their labor rates are much less than MB dealer rates.

Paul...
I did both Front and Rear even though one of them had about 2000 miles left on them because I didn't want to "Visit the Workshop" message so soon after getting 1 "axle" done! Mostly "City"/Local type driving...and I don't jackrabbit the car around.
Done at 21,500 Miles
Parts Front:
Brake Pads
Brake Cleaner
Brake Paste
TS Brake Sho ??
Sender Unit
Parts Rear:
Brake Shoe
Brake Cleaner
Brake Paste
Brake wear is not covered under a manufacturer's warranty in just about every make of automobile. This would be considered a maintenance item.
Break wear may be covered under a Maintenance Program if you have purchased one, or if it was included in the price of the vehicle.
There is no such thing as a Free Maintenance plan. The cost of this is rolled into the vehicle.

Total cost was $169.97. and about 2 1/2 hrs of my time. While the wheels were off, I decided to wash and wax the rims and wash the wheel wells. Plus, I had my 6 year old "helping".
From autopartswarehouse.com, I ordered:
Parts Ordered
Mercedes Benz 2004 Pagid (OEM) Brake Pad Set See Note Price: $55.73 Qty: 1 Part #: N1010-109959
Mercedes Benz 2004 Pagid (OEM) Brake Pad Set Price: $83.16 Qty: 1 Part #: N1010-140487
plus the sensors and caliper slide lube.
If you've done any work on a car, have a few tools, etc. it's not too much different than any other car -- just be sure the SBC is disconnected.
