So I go into my local auto parts store to get a set of wiper blades for my 04 E500. To my surprise, all I could find was the inserts. no biggy, 7 bucks. Get home, and take off the wiper blade assembly and I soon realize that you can't just replace them with inserts. So ok, I'll go to the dealer and get a set. I get there and they say 40 bucks. I thought that was a bit high for a pair but not horrible, then he tells me that's for each!
I about flipped out. I own 2 cars and 1 SUV and I've never heard of such a crazy price for wiper blades. WIPER BLADES! Eesh. So the parts guy kinda chuckled and said that IS a rediculous price for them and he knocked them down to 50.00 for the pair. That was very nice of him to do, so I bought them. So my question is:
Is there any place else, other than the dealer, that people are getting their wiper blades from? I generally replace them on my cars about every 3 months (DC area. Lots'o rain, and snow) and at 80 bucks, that will be a hard pill to swallow.
Sorry for the rant.

I had mine replaced under a TBS almost two years ago by the dealer with no charge because the originals were giving everyone fits.......lots of noise. I don't know whether your year qualifies for that. Check with your dealer. Yes, the list price are $80 for the pair, freaking ridiculous
MB must think the owners are rich and stupid!

Flash Gordon is right and I had mine ('03 E320) replaced twice while under the warranty.
It is possible to take the wiper blade unit apart and replace the rubber insert. I've already done this. You may need to lube the part of the insert that slides into the blade unit.
The end caps will snap off by inserting a very small screwdriver into the side of the cap and carefully prying each side of the cap.

Guys, you made me pull my receipt from the last time I bought them from the dealer out right at the parts counter. I bought part number 230-820-06-45. They list for $22.50 each and I paid $18.00 each, for a total of $36.00 for the pair. The parts guy even came outside and threw them on for me in the parking lot.
Sounds like you have been way overcharged, or the part changed from my 03' to your 04' Hell at this point I'll sell you a set for $60.00 and include shipping????

Ouch! I didn't think they were that expensive, but I figure for those kind of wiper from France, they has to be that much.
You know...
The parts guy asked me for my VIN when I went in to order them. He said that there are different types for the same model year. Maybe they switched them, mid year? I don't know. They did come in a very pretty Mercedes box though. Great, super.

A tip for those in the UK. Dealer price = £55. German Swedish and French price = £22.

See this link with a picture of the wiper blade I disassembled.

I haven't seen the same Lexor Type A inserts for a while in Wal-Mart. They do have the Michelin blades (also made by Lexor) at Wal-Mart that paulv reports he was able to use.
I used a needle nose plier to grasp and push the plastic end cap off the end of the assembly where the rubber insert feels fixed in place (that is the end where the metal tab underneath the plastic cap bites into the insert).
Thanks to whoever it was that first posted this on a VW forum (with pictures) that gave me the idea to take apart the wiper blade.

This is crazy. Someone should get together a list of crazy prices. I heard that 2004 and later VW 1.9 litre turbodiesels have to use VW 505.01 spec oil. It's sold by several companies in Europe but in the US, only VW dealers have it. They sell it for a reported $12-20 per quart. Synthetic oil that meets VW spec 505.00 isn't sufficient for the turbodiesel.
