where is second battery

OM says there are two batteries in the E class, One in the trunk easy to find and a second under hood for maintaing critical electronics. I assume this must be a small dry cell, but where is it & what's teh maint requiements?

Both batteries are sealed, rechargeable, and completely maintenance free.

... and I just changed my aux battery a couple of weeks ago because it finally died. I paid $125 for it at a local dealership.

I know your post is directed to starbrite, but I noticed that you're also from the Boston area and wanted to mention that I called Flagship on Rt 1 Lynnfield (where I bought the car) and they wanted $170 so I called Smith MB in Haverhill who wanted $125.

Paul the aux battery looks like the one I use on my plane and it is only about $30.00. It is also the same "type" battery. Looks like MB has tax on this one. Unless the $125 included labor for installation. Jim

The $125 was for the battery -- I installed it myself. The reason your plane battery is $30 is because it has a Beechcraft part number on it instead of an MB part number!!!

I choose Beechcraft for an example because I would expect someone who owns a Corvette & an E500 to fly a Bonanza V-tail.

paul...

How did you know that it died? If the main battery dies, the problem is fairly obvious the next time you try to start the car, but if something besides the starter stops working, how do you know it's the aux battery at fault and not the "something besides" itself? Wait ... let me guess ... one of those Germanglish trouble messages appears in the MFD?

I first got a series of 3 warnings one after another one night that were all brake/steering related. After I shut the engine off and restarted, the warnings were gone. At that point, I assumed it was one of those random gremlins and ignored it. About a week after that incident, the red battery warning came on and also went away after stopping the engine/restarting. In the next 3 weeks the red battery warning came on again a couple of more times. All of these occurred at night. When the last red warning came on, I left the car running and proceeded to take voltage readings on both batteries. Both batteries measured good charging voltage which is OK for the main battery but made med suspicious of the aux battery -- especially when the car was running for 20 mins. I shut the engine off and checked the voltages on both batteries again and found that the main battery was OK, but the aux battery voltage started to drop down at a rate of 0.01 volts/sec until it flattened out at 10.54 volts. I tested the aux battery a couple of more times and got the same results. Seems that the BCU was detecting a low voltage on the aux battery and the aux relay kept on clicking in causing the aux battery to receive charging voltage. Since the aux battery is just a backup for the SBC, and shouldn't have any kind of a continous drain, I disconnected the main battery and then disconnected the aux battery (both ground cables) and did a voltage test on the aux battery -- yes, it was 10.54 again. Called around to a couple of dealers for price & availablity -- it was obvious that the battery was dying.

Sorry for the long-winded story, but I wanted to make sure I gave you all the details (my wife complains about this all the time with me!!)

Regards,
Paul....

55fanatic...if your post was in fact directed at me? No plans for the battery, I just wanted to know where
it is because the owner;'s manual doesn't say. Also, if it required checking fluid levels I wanted to do so. And,
after the car sitting at the dealer since June, wanted to be able to charge it if necessary (main battery was 65% discharged )

Amen...and to those in this forum, which has been a tremendous help to me in buying my newest car this week. Many of my questions may have been basic to you old timers, but the answers from the patient respondents have enabled me to make an informed purchase from my local dealer.

So now I'm the proud owner of a "04 E320 4matic, tectite gray "stealth machine". :

And, as Don Adams (agent Smart) would say "and loving it !"

Edit: P.S. KosherBenz's wheels soon to be mounted.

OK Konigstiger, I'm not a complete dufous, but after removing the nut in the front of the cover, how do you release the housing ? I just can't seem to get it to budge.

Where I've circled in red appears to be some kind of catch/release ??

Edit: Yep, it's a release (one on left side as well), cover off and battery charge was fine.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I received the same warning (red battery in the center of the speed o' a few weeks back. Turns out (per the Stuttgart MB tech) that there was "a wire" somehow connecting the two batteries. Some how, mine "broke". This wire is about 12 feet long, so they ran a new wire vice pulling the old one because they would have had to "remove almost the entire interior".

When I took the car in and explained the problem, they asked me what color the battery error code was, white or red. I'm assuming based on Konigstiger's and my experiences that if you get a red battery, you can assume that either one battery is low, or you have a broken wire somehow.

Just my $.02

Well, this was interesting and strange. Disconnected the main battery and recharged ( took 6 1/2 hrs over 2 days, w/ a 4 amp charger)

When reconnected ( synch'd the windows/roof) got a headlight cornering malfunction msg in the display before starting. When started and driving approximately 1/2 mile received an ESP malfuntion msg. We had a lot of rain from Ernesto here on Long Island Fri/Sat and I thought maybe that caused it.

Was playing with the menus to set the clock and decided to "reset" all to factory defaults. Lo and behold both malfunctions disappeared.
(and the clock set itself via command)
As I say, STRANGE. Any comments on this one ??

Edit:Both malfunctions reappeared next time I started the car. Looked
ESP up in the OM and found in the "tips" section that if the battery is disconnected, the ESP has to be resycn'd. Now why wouldn't they put that in the battery disconnect section along w/the windows/sunroof resynch ? Oh, and the headlight cornering malfunction....turning on the lights resynchs that as well. Both malfunctions have not reappeared. Now if I could only figure out those Drive Dynamic seats....pressing buttons all over the place w/no effect. Did I mention that the rear armrest cup holder won't extend/come out ? And how come there's nothing in the OM re the rear overhead dome light switches. Geeez, you need an engineering degree to drive this car. Hey, but I do like it.

Yeah. I get random warnings all too often too. Today's random warning is "1 Malfunction Check Coolant". Its gone when I start the car later.

Its really a shame that you can't trust the warnings on the MFD.

I Stopped at an Infiniti dealer on the way home today on Sunrise Highway. Lexus on Tuesday... I want to see the Service Department once a year... for a Lube Oil & Filter, and a NYS Inspection... like all my friends. I'm starting to boil.

My wife's first, Lexus RX300 and now her second, an RX330 were just that. Not a single problem to the service dept...that's right not one in 6 years, neither in or out of warranty..
I just bought my '04 320 4matic last week after a relatively trouble free 5 yrs with my '98 320 4matic......I was hoping. There are just an awful lot of electronics in this car. (btw, the Lexus NAV blows away the MB)
