Actually neither the E-320 4matic nor the E-350 4matic have the 722.9 tranny (7 speed). Both still use the 722.6 (5 speed)

Just as a reference my new E55 gets around 11 mpg in town with very mellow driving (still under break-in). I hope after break-in I get up to the epa's 15 mpg. MY CLK500 used to get 16 in town all day long, just like the EPA said on the sticker.

RJC, The best I have gotten in town in the E55 was a dismal 12 mpg, on the highway I got 21 mpg.

The CLS with its K4 mods gets a dismal 9 mpg in town and on the highway I get 14 mpg.

That power is all so addicting.

I just don't agree that we need high gasoline prices to achieve this.

As for GM dropping H1s, I really don't think the cost of fuel was that much of a factor (although it could have been the straw that broke the camels back). When you start getting into 6 figure vehicles, I don't think MPG is that big of an issue. I think it had to do more with high value SUVs becoming more "sporty", and less "utility" in looks.
revstriker, your assesment that higher fuel costs are the "straw that broke the camels back" is how I see things as well. The person that can afford an H1 can afford the fuel. However, the H1 went from being "cool" to being a symbol of over-consumption of fuel. A significant number of people buying H1's were not buying them for rock climbing but for attention. Now the attention is mostly negative, so the fad is over. Even the wealthy are influenced by the societal trends; during recessions, the wealthy consume less because of guilt, desire not to offend, and fear of crime directed against them, not because they cannot afford to. So the wealthy are affected if the societal norms shift towards fuel efficiency and economy.

I bet many of you saw the Britney Spears picture with her baby in a mini Cooper. Most people probably were thinking about the incorrect postioning of the child in a forward facing seat. I was thinking, my God, if Britney Spears is riding around in a Mini Cooper, then the small car is really coming back in style in the US. If I were BMW, I would be jumping for joy at seeing my car "advertised" in the news.

I believe that our dependence on foreign energy sources is our achilles heel and higher prices will help us make the shifts necessary to decrease the dependance. Public service campaigns and accurate fuel economy ratings hardly matter when energy is cheaper.

Thanks for pointing this out. I just mistyped that one number. I already fixed it and now my statement makes sense. I just wanted to point out that only the RWD E350 models got a little better MPGs than the old E320 RWD because of the 7-G. Otherwise, the 4-Matic sucks more gas on the E350 since both the E350 and the E320 have a 5-G trany.

Your pretty damn lucky you dont have to travel far. My office is in Irvine now, a bit closer than Costa Mesa area. But the traffic here in LA is brutal but that's what the TL is for lol.

I don't think it is a coincidence that GM is dropping the H1.

Addendum: Consumer Reports posts their real world mpg findings when they test cars. It is a real eye opener when compared to what the EPA figures are listed as in comparison. I don't wish you ill parkums; it is just that much learning requires pain.
Yo 72. You are a fool. I get the impression "people like you" feel all high and mighty b/c you drive a MB (2003 350 for that matter). I was simply asking what others were getting for fuel MPG - my experience has been less than stated by the ratings.

For all you haters who say fuel is not a purchase criteria are just as ignorant. Sure you might be "rich" but you are far from "wealthy".

I was always the one in the family to measure mpg on all the cars, but since for some god forsaken reason i start buying MBs, i jsut stopped looking at those. For me now i'm going to drive the way i drive...CRAZY!
Thats y i upgraded to V8. But these new damn new Pirellis wouldn't let me do no burnouts

I'm seeing about 21 on my 2006 E350 RWD. I am very happy with that. I think for the size and weight that is excellent.

One of the things I love most about this car is the huge gas tank that equates to longer range. I can drive accross the state and back on one tank of gas. When you drive as many miles as I do (45k annually) it makes life better (especially during the freezing cold).

My 03 E500, for the past 13k miles (43k total), has averaged 20.9 MPG. Last trip from Central PA to Red Bank, NJ, did 26.6 up and 26.2 returning--rush hour traffic...

Can you imagine buying an E55 and not drive it due to MPG? Sorry, it is not something I considering when looking at a new vehicle. I bet my 70 Vett gets 12 MPG. What is the saying... "I pass everything but a gas station"

For those MPG aware, good deal. But a Benz is not the way to go... maybe a VW TDI or Honda Hybrid. Hey... I hear the Hybird can do burnouts! heheheh
It doesn't have to be all or nothing. There are a lot of decent performing cars that fall somewhere between a Viper V10 and a Toyota Prius! It's all trade-offs and in my opinion, I went with the 350 because it's still fairly sporty and gets reasonable milage...

milewise, the e350 sport doesn't seem to be doing much better than the SUVs, e350 seems to average 20, the X5 3.0 averages high teens. ..of course, for the highway and speed e is more zippy, but the x5 just looks money..for the same mpg. its a personal choice.

Yep...my E350 Sport & X5 3.0 (a rare 5-speed) get comparable gas mileage both city and highway. The stick definitely doesn't help with mileage compared to a couple friends with automatic X5 3.0s. My former auto-tranny 530i with the same engine (of course less weight and less drag) got 5+ mpg better in the city and 10+ better on the highway than my X5.
