Thinking of getting a E320 CDI....

I was wondering if there was anything I should know about it beforehand...i.e. which model year or build months to avoid, how reliable is it, any common problems with the CDI or E in general, what is your "real world" CDI fuel economy, do you use biodiesel in it? I am open to new or used, although i'd rather get one sooner rather than later (i.e. not waiting for BLUETEC).

I am looking at buying it and using B100 Biodiesel (100% biodiesel, or 95% biodiesel) at a local San Francisco co-op (http://sfbiofuels.com/). Does it work fine without any modifications? Do I just have to change my fuel filter more often initially?

Any insights, help, or experience with the CDI would be welcome!

Thanks,
Ben

Our '05 has been quite reliable. It presently has 15K miles on the clock and has required a trip to the dealer only for trim problems and a minor fuel leak.

We've averaged 31 mpg so far, with the worst tank 29 mpg and the best 38mpg. I hasten to add that this has been very gentle driving with almost no stop-and-go.

M-B does not recommend biodiesel. Our owner's manual states: "Only use commercially available vehicular diesel fuels No. 2 or No.1 (ASTM D975 No. 2D or No. 1D)". I'd guess that if you ignore this recommendation and use biodiesel anyway, you'll forfeit warranty coverage on the fuel system in the event you have problems.

You should be aware that the current CDI can't be sold new in California because of emissions. I believe CDIs imported from other states are required to have 7500 miles on the odo before California will title or register them.

I've enjoyed our CDI. Apart from the great mpg numbers, the car's cruising range is huge - 600 miles per tank minimum.

Good luck.
