For MBenzNL and 2ManyToys....Command Question

Ok,

So you two guys seem to be the authorities on here about USA vs. Euro Comand units.

I have the option of purchasing a Euro unit. Problem is, from what I've gathered from the info you guys have posted, I think there's a problem with it. From the front, it sure looks like a Euro unit. From the back, however, it looks like a US unit. I attached the pics somewhere in this post, I think. What do you think?

Also, If you've read any of my posts, I'm interested in playing MP3's through my head unit. DVD in motion doesn't interest me as much but would be nice. I understand that I need the Euro unit to watch movies. I'm trying to figure out if I can get my current head unit to play MP3's. Don't want to buy a Euro unit if I don't have to.

I've been able to get the 3-5-7 to work. Can't do much there but change the logo. I can get into the Engineering menu, but I can't get into the hidden engineering menu to enable Mp3. Could this be that the secret menu only exists for units that are capable of playing MP3's? That's the conclusion I've come to unless you guys tell me different.

I'm sure you two are soooooo sick of answering newbie Comand questions, but I've spent hours searching this board and there are so many contradicting statements made here that my head is spinning.

Anyway, please spell it out for me. What do I need to have/do to get mp3 playing on my head unit.

any US spec comand can play MP3s...easily enabled by going to the dealership and have them perform a SOFTWARE upgrade (of which they should be aware off IF their people care to read the bulletins that they receive from MBUSA)

what you posted is a euro model 7039 with no TV input or aux output plugs.

The euro model 6036 (not pictured) has TV and Aux plugs. There are no diffrences besides that. Steve is right, if you have a US version that does not play MP3, a simple dealer upgrade is all that is needed.

I have never personally tried to access the engineering menu in a US comand so I cant comment if you can enable mp3 in there.

Thanks guys!!

What a relief. Here's the thing. I went to my local MB dealer - EuroMotorCars, Germantown and was told by my SA that only some 2004 comands can be upgraded and mine isn't one of them. So if what you say is correct, he either didn't really check or is being given erroneous information by his tech's. Maybe a call to MBUSA tech support will do the trick.

Thanks guys.

Gotta say, I've been a member of many automotive boards and this one is by far the best.

Does anyone happen to know the bulletin number for this upgrade?

I've been on the phone with MBUSA and the rep there says no-go but I would need to talk to someone in the CRC (tech-support) center to be sure. Well, apparently, there are only two people in this group so you have to leave a message. I've left 2 so far today with no call back. Eesh!

Does anyone know which command would work on a middle east car ?

I have a regular single CD in my 2005... But i just picked up a field job and a navigation unit will make my work alot easier (not having to memorise all the locations i need to drive to at work)

I'm curious, why does this unit not have that blue coloured input on the left-hand side or the rear?

Also, can someone tell me what the blue input was/is for?

Thanx!

Are you refering to the TV tuner input?

No, assuming that the monster TV tuner input (that looks like a computer monitor connection) is #2 on the attached pic, but just to the left of the TV tuner input (see #1).

The #1 is missing from the unit originally posted in this particular message. What is the purpose of this port?

(And from other posts I understand that #3 is the AUX in port.)

as I know it, #1 is for the tv tuner, #2 is for the rear monitor out.

Interestingly (or not, perhaps), my non-APS Audio 50 also has the #1 port. Didn't think Audio 50 had TV capability (maybe in Europe?)...

greetingz,
Ahhhhh.....

Appreciate the clarification. That would be why there's nothing connected to the blue port on mine; I'm beginning to conclude that I don't have a GPS antenna installed...

greetingz,
But wait... does that mean that the COMAND unit in post one of this thread is a non-NAV COMAND?

Would REALLY like clarification of that.

Thanx!

When I took my (navigation equip) comand unit out of my 2006 W211, it looked exactly like the one in post #1. Not sure what steve is talking about.

BTW, see my above post.

with #1 I was refering to the 1 on YOUR picture of the back of a comand with 4 numbered connectors

comand is NEVER nav - the NAV for the comand is to be found in the trunk of the car...APS50 IS a NAV headunit that has an integrated nav drive...the US spec audio50 is nothing more (or less) then a ROW APS50 with removed NAV features (hence the reason why the blue nav connector is still on the back of the US audio50s)

Clayton,

I took my car in during the summer to get the schedule C service done, I also inquired (thanks to this board) about the command software upgrade to play MP3's. My SA told me he would install the latest flash upgrade to the unit but could not gurantee that it would allow for MP3 playback. Got the car back later in the day stuffed a MP3 CD in and what do you know it plays MP3's just fine now. Put the presure on the SA or talk with one of the guys that works on the electronics of the car. Worse case make up some lame excuse and tell him the screen keeps cutting out, that in itself will warrant the latest flash upgrade. My car was built in November of 03 if that helps.

greetingz,
Sorry for my not being clear. Are the following statements correct then:

For Audio 50 APS, the GPS antenna connects to the back of an Audio 50 APS because its NAV-integrated?

For COMAND (Euro and North America), the GPS antenna connects to the NAV drive in the rear of the car?

In either case, the GPS antenna would be installed under the dash, behind the instrument cluster?

Thanks for everyone's patience with me!
