This is what I paid.

I went to this page http://www.autohausaz.com I bought front/back rotors, brake pads, brake paste, 1 rear sensor, and brake cleaner for under $400 (free shipping 3 day ground). All the parts were OEM except the brake cleaner. Had a certified MB mechanic for $150 per set (front/back). The expenisive part is if you choose to bleed your brake fluid that will cost of additional couple of hundred bucks because of the SBC has to be done by a computer system to prevent getting air in the lines.

What's the deal with bleeding the brake fluid? Does that have to be done each time brakes and rotors are replaced? Is this only required for SBC equipped cars? i.e. not an issue for 2007+ models? Just curious.

Wow, I only paid about $259 just for rotation on all tires, and then replacement pads and rotors on the rear.

I'm in a discussion on another forum about bleeding the brakes on cars equipped with SBC. Some WIS procedures say that you can do it without exercising the SBC and some say you have to exercise the SBC.

BTW, brake fluid should be replaced every 2 years on all cars, not just MBs.

paul...

How many miles were on your 2006 E350 when the rear rotors needed replacing?

Brake fluid is hygroscopic, which means it wants to absorb water. It continually does so from the air, and water lessens its effectiveness (the water boils at high brake temperatures, and the released vapor is the same as air in the lines). Plus the water is highly corrosive to brake parts. That is why brake fluid needs replacement every two years. It's also why you should do it after the humid/rainy season if you live in a region with wet and dry times. In California, for example, you should do it in the spring even if that doesn't line up with a brake job or service.

Order via Luke at Tire Rack, approx $450 with shipping to a local tire installer near you, another $100 for the balance/install. About half what you were expecting.

The brake cost thread just reminded me of an SLR owner I saw at my dealership shelling out $30,000 for a brake job.. ...oi oi ...I guess it's all relative to the car's value. LOL

That is what the owners manuals states. But, my mechanic it is not necessary until the brake fluid gets cloudy. Sorry I don't know nothing about 2007 models.

Just think of the dealer expense being "Mercedes Tax " which is the extra you pay for driving a luxury car. Jim

It is a very good idea to bleed the fluid at least every 2 years. Completely flush out old fluid and replace with new. I have done this on all the other vehicles I have owned and had no brake issues.

Well, that said, I have not yet figured out how to do this without taking my car in to the MB dealer. Does anyone know how we can do this without using the Star Diagnosis System? I heard you need the Star Diagnosis System to bleed the system. I also found that there is a system called the Magus Win-star Benz SBC bleeding and reset tool by I.C.M Inc sold in Europe but not sure where I can buy this in US. Does anyone know if there are such devises/tools that are available in US or ways to bleed the SBC system without taking it into MB dealer? Please let me know.

Maybe the guys who has upgraded their brake calipers with larger ones such as Brembo knows how to bleed it, since they had to disconnect the brake lines.

The last time I talked to ICM they wanted $500 + shipping for that tool. I told them that a brake bleed job was about $130 so they would never get any weekend mechanics to buy them.

I also ent you a PM.

paul...

30K for a brake job! I guess the dealer believes there is a sucker born every minute and they are right!

Carbon fiber reinforced ceramic brake discs with 8 piston calipers on the front and 4 piston calipers on the rear. This is race car stuff, and totally necessary on a vehicle with a 208 MPH top speed. I don't think there is a single SLR owner who would consider himself a "sucker". They just have WAY more expensive toys than the rest of us.

FWIW, I just had full brakes and rotors done on an 03 W211 Sport E500 for $960, but had a $100 off coupon for a grand total of $860 at an independent MB/BMW specialist.

Pad and Rotors

If you lived in San Fernando Valley, Go see this shop named Tampa Chevron..look for Pan, He is a very good mechanic who does only European Car. His number is 818-701-1919...All he works on is MB and BMW and also use original parts. When he work on my E430, he only charged me 300.00 for brake pads, removing my rotor and changing my spring to HR..it took him a good 5 hours to R/R. The only thing that i bought personally is the brembo cross drilled rotors and he put it in for me....Check him out and im pretty sure you will like his work and professionalism....good price with quality work.
