Erratic Static - 2004 E320

Need your help!

Can't figure this one out...nor can Mercedes.

Intermittently, car sound like major sparking or shorting for about 4 to 6 seconds when driving. Then disappears. May not happen for weeks but is unnerving when it happens and has occurred on 8 to 10 occasions. Also, can't identify if from engine or upgraded sound system. I have not heard the sound since my wife is principal driver and she has stated it is frightening and loud when it does occur. Before she she can react and turn off radio, sound disappears.

Anyone have similar problems and can advise?

Is the "static" coming from the Audio System? If it is you need a software upgrade.

Perhaps it's just that you're electronically delayed, and you just can't figure out how to turn knobs properly. What you need is a good son to help you figure this stuff out.

Is this the best you could come up with for your first post, cmb13?

My guess would be that the Audio Gateway (AGW) and/or related software will need to be updated.

Also mention the following bulletins:

P-B-82.62/361a DEC04 Crackling and Static Noises from Speakers When Radio Is On

This may be caused by bad grounding of the AGW. Replacing the AGW bracket with a Zinc coated AGW bracket (part # A211 545 87 40) is recommended.

P-B-82.62/499 MAR06 AM Radio Interference during Braking or When Driving in the Rain, Model 211 (2003 – 2005)

The AM interference is the result of wearing of the 50% brake wear sensor. When the brake is activated, the exposed strands of the worn sensor create an electrical circuit, which can then cause radio interference. The same condition can occur while driving in the rain, even when the brake pedal is not activated, because SBC periodically may apply the brakes as part of the system’s dry brake function.

The matter is addressed by cutting off the wires at the brake wear sensor’s harness connector and at the sensor. The sensor from the outer brake pad will not be removed and the connector of the brake wear sensor will remain plugged into the wire harness to protect the plug contacts/terminals from corrosion.

There are two front brake pad wear sensors (left warns at 50%, right warns at 100%) and one rear that warns at 100%. When exchanging brake linings, no new brake wear sensor should be installed. Due to the removal of the brake wear sensor, the maintenance computer may instruct “Check Brake Linings” at each future maintenance session, even if the brake linings are new.

As of model year 2006 the 50% brake wear sensor has been eliminated from production vehicles.

As a pretty experienced forum member (Corvette Forum), I knew a comment like that would be coming really quickly. I'm just giving him trouble, b/c I am his son, and he is a little electronically deficient.

Thanks for the good responses, though; I don't know the first thing about MB's, and the above post seems likely to answer the question.

OK, thanks for the clarification. NOW it's funny.
