Ball Joint Replaced?

Has anyone had to have their ball joint replaced? I just got back from the dealership with what I thought might be bearings going bad but they said it was the ball joint that was causing my tires to not properly align on the road and thus run on the outside caps.

They are being replaced as I write this.

Has anyone had this problem?

I picked up my car one day this Summer after a particulary rough Month of unscheduled service dept twice a week visits for the endless electronics problems, and found that the Ball Joints had been replaced (on the work order). I hadn't complained about any suspension/steering/front end problems... but they had been replaced.

Deep in my heart, I can't believe they went over the car to check for other problem areas when common sense says that they would have been thrilled to finally get the car's electronics repaired & OUT of the shop for a couple of months. As much of an easy going person as I remain when my car is torturing me, there comes a point when the service department just wants to crawl out from under the car of the month and start to look good for other owners with problems.

So, yes, my ball joints were replaced.

Yeah mine were replaced as well when I was in for B service. It stated on the work order that they could hear clunking noise. There was no noise... I have a feeling that this did not need to be replaced.

Also, since it has been done my steering feels looser and not as tight (more play before it responds). Could replacing these cause this?

I had mine replaced under the extended warranty at about 75,000 miles. The front wheel was squeeking when I went over the speed bumps in my office parking lot.

I did one today on a 220 that I upsold to the extended warranty company. The boot was torn.. that means dirt will enter it and then create noise. Fixed before the customer even had to come in complaining about it.

Warranty "add-ons" require approval from a group leader or shop foreman.

Yes, this is what they are doing, there is a recall to check the cover or something..

Service Campaign 2006040004 MAY06
Clean sleeves on front axle carrier / new bolts & washers
E (2003-2006)

Campaign will only be performed in conjunction with an A or B service maintenance or other warranty repair that requires the underbody paneling to be removed as part of the repair.

That information is no longer valid. A revision has been made to that campaign. The replacedment of the bolts can now be claimed under warranty without performing maintenance/warranty repair. They added an additional operation number for removing the bottom engine compartment panels.

The bolts fasten the subframe to the body. This only concerns the two rear bolts. The previous design was sealing water into the "sleeve" and creating some nasty rust in some cases. The new bolts have slotted washers that allow the moisture to run out.

Different from the ball joints.

Ball joints replaced by Caliber Motors Anaheim Hills

My front lower ball joints were replaced today at 15,300 miles. There was a definite knocking noise, felt through the steering wheel and brake pedal at low, parking lot speeds.

I dropped my car off at Caliber at 3:00pm and got a complimentary C-class loaner with 500 miles on the clock, even though my car was purchased at MB-Laguna Niguel.

At 5:30pm I received a call indicating my car was ready to be picked up. Completed work included two new lower ball joints, alignment, and car wash. Not bad for 2.5 hours of time!
