oil change questions

1, Are oil changes free of charge durring first few years of ECDI ownership?

2, Oil Type in manual shows 05 to use CG rated oil. Does Napa or Walmart carry?

Thanks

Hmm. The only thing I've found that meets DCX's specs is Mobil 1 0w-40.

Perhaps Konigstiger has information that I don't. He tends to know everything and is the most indispensible member of this forum, IMHO!

manual shows many weights depending on climate extremes must meet C4-G specification. Found oil that meets this at Autozone in Diesel oil area. Problem is it is a 15-40 weight.

Current MB Oil Recommendations

http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html Note that none of the 30 weight Mobil 1 oils are recommended. This may be because they have a petroleum base despite being called a true synthetic. The 40 weight Mobil 1 oils are true synthetics.

When I got my oil changed last the dealer did not put 0W 40. I specifically asked why they are no longer using the 0W 40 (they are using a 5w 40 Mobil 1) and they said something to the fact that they (and I think it might just be my dealer) are switching to just one oil that can handle all their engines (including the diesels).

Does this make sense? Anyway, I really don’t think that there is much of a difference between a 0-40 and a 5-40.

"W" signifies the low-temperature pour character of the oil I can understand your concern in having to use 5W over 0W in CO. I'm guessing MBUSA and probably not your dealer dictated the conformity given bearing, piston ring, and other clearances uniformity in their production engines and 30 or 40 viscosity should perform well in cold-cranking ability.

If you actually look at Mobil 1 specs you'll find very little difference in cold flow specs between 0W-40 and 15W-50.

It's synthetic.

The new 5W-40 Mobil 1 is a low ash version of 0W-40 Mobil 1. It's designed to work with the particulate filters on the new V6 diesels. I think they call it a 5W just to differentiate it from the 0W-40.

Now that you mention this, I think that I was told something about it being low ash. So I guess I will not worry about it anyway. Free oil changes are a good thing, but not if they were to use oil I am not crazy about, but it looks as if this is fine.

I got my oil tested again. It had about 5,000 miles on it, the car had about 16,000 miles and it was the second oil change that was originally changed at about 10K. All the break in debris were gone, the TBN was much higher than at the first oil change at 5k miles. The oil was in perfect condition and the lab said I should just go with what the computer says now since the engine is totally free of junk from break in.

I will try and post the result in the service thread. I will have the oil changed, free of charge, when the life of this oil only hits about 5,500 miles because the FSS computer will say so, but this change will be the first one that I will run about 10k miles on and maybe test it after that. I have not been resetting the FSS computer when I had the oil changed between service requirements. No point in throwing away perfectly good oil though, so I am beginning to trust MB’s FSS.
