1st my car says its time for service B, then it says C and now back to B, whats up?

I'm at 13700 after 13 months of ownership...car indicated (ahead of time of course) that a service B would be due around 13400...I'm waiting until the car is at 15000 to take it in, in that I'm sticking to 5k oil change cycle (lets not discuss whether or not this is needed)...so now the car tells me "overdue" for service B by xxx miles...OK thats expected...but on occasion now instead of saying "overdue" for service B by xxx miles it says "overdue" for service C by xxx miles...now this morning I'm back to B...what's this about is this normal

TIA

Chris

Chris,

It depends on what you consider "normal". I really don't think that the FSS software is sophisticated enough to allow proper tracking of what you're trying to do -- which is trying to lock into a 5K multiplication factor for your oil changes. FSS typically expects the car to be serviced within +/- 500 miles (if I remember correctly) of when the notification is set on the MFD.

I would suggest that you have the car serviced now, have the FSS reset, and then wait until you get to 20K and have the car serviced again -- this would only put 6.5K on Mobil 1 0W-40 which is not the end of the world!

I guess I'm curious of why you didn't start this oil change regime when you first hit 5K?

Regards,
paul...

Thanks paulv...strange thing to me is that it cant seems to make up its mind...sometimes it says it needs B and sometimes C...I'm only 200 or so miles over the time

As for the 5k oil change...I did start it at 5k, its just this is the first time that it is due for a service

Chenry,

Did you reset the FSS every time you did the 5k oil changes and set it for the non-229.5 spec oil? FSS always defaults to 13k when reset and 229.5 oil has been used.

paul....

The 229.5 is the MB oil spec number for our cars and you'll find it on the back of the Mobil 1 0W-40 container.

I was thinking that since you're changing oil every 5K, you should confirm the FSS with the non-229.5 entry, so FSS doesn't default to 13K (when the confirm has been done with 229.5). In other words, let the FSS think you're using dino oil instead of the M1.

Does this make sense to you? I think I'm starting to confuse myself!!!!
