Fortune Compares E320 Bluetec and Lexus GS450H Hybrid

Nice article on improving diesel technology.

Bottom line "The Mercedes leaves Lexus in the dust."

Thanks, Mark.

The comment, "..range only about 400 miles" is a puzzler. I've never gotten less than 500 miles on a tank of fuel with our CDI, and many have been in the 600 mile neighborhood. This is one of the CDI's benefits that I've really enjoyed, as it feels great to fill the tank only every 2 - 3 weeks.

Regards.

Original poster took the comment out of context...

You'll see that the GS is much faster 0-60 (as it should be). Hybrids for Lexus are a departure from what hybrid typically means to most people. Hybrids to most people mean increased fuel economy while in the case of Lexus that's not the reason. Hybrids for Lexus mean increased power. They see hybrid technology (they = Lexus) as an alternative to forced induction.

GS450h is an example, RX400h is an example and the upcoming LS600lh is another example.

However the GS looks godawful.

I don't see how that's out of context. I don't think he was trying to make the point that one was faster than the other. To some, there's a lot more to a vehicle than how fast it can reach 60MPH.

I do agree that the Lexus is pretty fugly.

Yes - the Lexus *is* fugly. And the OP has a great future in politics. Way out of context.

It very specifically said "on cost, mileage and range" not overall - as "bottom line" would suggest.

If "cost, mileage and range" were the only things I cared about I'd get a TDI Golf.

Something leaving another in the dust is usually is a reference to speed.
