Electronic trunk closer

Has anyone had any problems with their trunk closer? Once in awhile I can hear the closer 'prime' but it doesn't close. Then when I press the button again the trunk closes without the closer primeing. It seems like it sometimes fail to engage.

No problems here however, you should have it looked at. Mention DTB - P-B-80.20/34 AUG05 Remote Trunk Closing Non Functional. The potentiometer (part # A211 820 15 97) on the trunk lid drive unit may need to be replaced.

Potentiometer? Konigs....you and your big fancy words.

Are you sure the problem isn't the flatulation modulator?

Nope it is the falange...... Anyways, just FYI a potentiometer is a variable resistor. The volume knob in an older audio amplifier is a potentiometer but the come in all shapes and sizes and are typically used as trimmers to tune electronics so it is within spec.

Konigstiger, thanks I will take this to the dealer.

the potentiometer on the trunk closer detects at what angle the trunk is at.

the sound of the closer "prime" is the sound of the LATCH (that sits in the plastic panel opening just above the bumper) going up...once that latch goes up (pressing the opening/closing button) it STAYS up for a while so the second time that you hit that same switch the LATCH does not have to go up again

If the trunk has been open for a while - the trunkcloser goes into some sort of "sleep" mode after which it might be that you either have to press the closer button longer (keep it pressed for 1 second) or press it twice (as the first press was only a short press)...

nothing weird about that - perfectly normal...the potentiometer has NOTHING to do with that what-so-ever.

greetingz,

greetingz,
You are the undisputed expert (sincere comment) and I’m not disputing your advice however, I have yet to experience the “sleep mode” you mention while leaving the trunk open for a period of time. I'm not saying it doesn't exist or it hasn't happened to others. I’ll have to be more attentive as to how long I actually press the button. My norm is one quick press- always, even after the trunk has been open for a while.

greetingz,
In regards to my situation the times when it has happened I have opened the trunk, done what I needed, and then pressed the button. The trunk at that time was open less than a minute. I doubt that it entered the sleep mode in that short a time.

I have a exact same problem. I took it to the dealership to have it fixed, but it worked fine so I couldn't show it to them.

Hoping to hear if you are any luck fixing this problem.

Cheers,

I had the car in for service on the trunk closer problem last week. It looks like they ran diagnostics using SDS and got some codes back 9500, 9502 which made the tech replace the trunk control unit. The unit was reprogrammed using SDS. So far it has worked as expected. I don't know the partnumber for the control unit.

Does anyone know what the codes mean?

I have the same issue with mine. Every time I mention it to the SA, it works fine. It's just one of those irritating electrical problems.....

Hmm, I thought this was normal Mercedes stuff. Sometimes I only have to press once, sometimes I have to press twice. If I need to push twice, it makes the normal "thunk" sound on the first push, but the trunklid stays put. Second push, the lid closes.

I've never really found anything specific as to when it needs two pushes, but if it fails to happen for your SA, I bet you're pushing the button right after you opened the trunk and not waiting for a few minutes.

There seems to be no pattern. Sometimes I push once (it always whirrs) and walk away only to look back and find the trunk still open. It is never up for more than a few seconds. I open the trunk, grab my laptop, and push the button.

Prevailing fault code 9502 meant the connection to component trunk lid position sensor (potentiometer) was interrupted or had a short circuit as suggested in my previous post. Since it was a warranty claim they replaced the trunk lid control module (TLC) part number A211 870 30 26.

1987 Mercedes 300 SDL
Trunk Closer

I see that this is an option on the new Bluetec E320, and was wondering how everyone likes it? Is it worth the purchase. I haven't drove any of the newer models, the only MB car I have owned is the '87 300 SDL, which was bought brand new and has 388,000 miles on it. So all of the new features and options are totally new to me.

Same problem

I've been to my dealer 3 times already; first time they changed the trunk switch, and the last time they changed an electronic control unit. I'm still having the problem (pushing the switch more than once), and at times the trunk 'refuses' to shut and I have to force it down. This is an incredibly aggrevating problem.

I've call MBUSA about it to complain, and tomorrow I'll have to go back in again for the 4th time to have it looked at (and a total of six days with the dealership.) My car is only 1.5 months old (E350 2008) - I wish I had known this as I would not have gotten this option.

Can such an issue be cited under the California Lemon Law?

Advise the CAC @ 800-367-6372 that you want your local MBUSA field rep to meet with you and your dealership shop foreman at the dealership to resolve this matter.

Thank you for that advise. I will call CAC tomorrow morning and request this of them. Hopefully this will all go well - I am tired of wasting all the time and energy over this. When I bought the car I expected everything would be Q&A tested and working.

I have an 08 E550 and I love the option.

Maybe out of 100 open/closes it has done it two or three times. I hear it start to bring the trunk down but it doesn't. I just hit the button again and it works.

I think its just one of those things. If its happening more often then that, then of course I'd take it to get checked.

I love the feature. It sounds like some of you, like Saffron, are having it happen A LOT??

I have on my Bluetec and have not had any problems. I like it since the closer buttons help avoid touching the paintwork to close the trunk.

This is why I had the trunk closer on my W221. But all MBs have a handle at the inner side of the trunk lid, can close it without touching the paint. The owner may learn it but others don't know how to do it, trunk closer helps there.

mspaul, it is an option, actually on all W211 model versions (at least in Europe).

They're keeping my car for 2 days! They say that they cannot find anything wrong with the mechanism and they said that there are no error codes coming up. At least they are trying - let's see where this all goes. More to follow...
