HOLY STROMBOLI...New tranny for my E?!?!?!?!
So, I take my car into the dealer to address a squeaky seat. I asked them to reset the adaptive tranny while it was in there. I asked them to do that because when I would slow to make a turn, at say an intersection, and then accelerate out of the turn, the tranny would feel like it's going into the next gear but it really stayed in the same gear. Kinda like a phantom shift. I read somewhere that this is most likely the torque converter and that it will sometimes do this if the adaptation for the tranny wasn't complete. Anywho, I asked them to reset the tranny. No problem, right? WRONG! Got a call back today saying that they're either gonna have to replace the transmission control module or the ENTIRE TRANSMISSION!! HUH? The thing shifted perfectly smooth accept for the occassional problem that I mentioned above. I was out on a business lunch when I got the call and couldn't really ask a bunch of questions but has anyone ever had to have their 7G replaced? Any reason I shouldn't have them replace it?
EEESH, to be continued.

I had a transmission replaced in the W220 S600, and let me tell you something. If they replace it, they put a brand new one transmission. MB doesn't believe in rebuilt transmissions.
So, if they are giving you a new transmission, then go ahead and let them replace that bad boy. I can tell you that the new 7G transmissions are the smoothest shifting transmissions out there. My E63 shifts so smooth its hard to tell when its shifting many times. Not to mention, its a hell of a lot more responsive than my old E350.

We'll see. I've left them a message asking for more info. I think they're gonna try the TCM first if that doesn't correct it, they're gonna put in a new tranny. I guess I'm excited a little.

If it's under warranty, let them replace it.
BTW, Mercedes sells rebuilt transmissions.
It's not what they use for warranty replacement, however.

Yep, totally under warranty.
You know, the more I think about it, the more I'm impressed with MB service. Rather than trying to write it off as 'normal' or 'they all do this' they are actually going above and beyond if they actually swap out the tranny. It's such a minor thing and doesn't happen all the time.
On a side note...
The 2006 ML350 they're giving me as loaner does the EXACT same thing. Weird. That's why I don't thing it's the transmission internals but rather the software or TCM. But as I've said in many of my posts...."What the Hell do I know?"

Clarification....
Ok, so my SA just called and stated that the transmission isn't accepting the new program. So they're going to swap out the TCM. After that, if it still won't accept the program, in goes a new transmission.

No reason! I would suggest, since the vehicle was documented as a transmission buy-back, to push for a replacement rather than go through the time consuming elimination process (i.e.: replacing parts, repeat visits, etc.) in trying to rectify shift concerns.

Don't feel too bad about your Mercedes transmission. My "reliable" Honda Odyssey will be on its 3rd transmission in a matter of a few more weeks.
And for the record, Honda does not believe in new transmissions, the dealer will happily charge the owner of this Consumer Reports Top-Rated vehicle $2200 for a rebuilt transmission.

As of right now it looks like the TCM and not the transmission. They're ordering a new TCM so I should have my car back by early next week. I'll update.

not my experience??
Interesting? I have and 04 e320 and have had various transmission issues. After the 3rd!!!! i repeat 3rd REBUILD MB finally replaced it with a new one. when i questioned my service advisor about the practice he told me that MB only authorizes a new tranny after they rebuild it at least one time. To boot, there are quota's for new transmissions. So when i had mine fixed the tech was telling me how difficult it was for him to get mb to authorize a new transmission? weird right??
Either way i was pleased in that i dont find it abnormal for them to attmept ot rebuild it first..but the idea of a quota is odd>

First Clutch
My 83 240 D went 144,000 before needing a clutch. First engine went 329,000. Still ran, but was a little drippy, so I replaced it. That car is why I had 8 more Benz's.

Benz-O, funny you should start this thread, although I don't have the 7g I did have a problem on Tuesday with my transmission. Had a car load of people and was traveling up a minor hill, the car stayed in first and almost red lined the TAC, finally shifted into 2nd on its on, 3rd etc. Did it a few times on the way back to the office. I called yesterday and the car is going in tomorow. Will let you know. BTW. I had a brand spanking new MB engine thrown in my car last July due to a valve problem. I have no complaints with MB Service

Its good to hear nice things about MB service here after most people just bash them. I for one have found my MB service to be much better than Honda/Acura or Toyota/Lexus service. Hell I get a loaner each time I take my car in, appointment or no appointment, get treated like im family, people know my 1st name, and hell it takes me no more than 10 minutes to drop my car off and pick up a loaner.
What more could I ask for?

Mercedes replaced my transmission with a new one a few months back. When I would brake to a stop, you could feel it downshift. It was quite harsh, so the dealer said Mercedes told them to replace it with a new one. They shipped a new transmission from Germany and it arrived within a few days and took one day to install. No problems since!

Right, same transmission. But what are the odds that they're doing the exact same thing. That's why I don't think there is anything mechanically wrong with my transmission. But rather the TCM. I don't know...actually I hope they do replace it. Can only help, right?
