Locking/Unlocking Chirps
Hello--
I was fortunate enough to detail Romeo550's new 2007 SL550 the other week, and much like our European counterparts, his new ride has a chirping sound when locking and unlocking the vehicle.
I like that.
Has anybody done anything to acheive this on our models?

Are you sure you want this? I think this can be enabled. When you lock the car, you can still hear the locks click. It's more discrete and I like not disturbing others around me.

Our '03 was born mute and will stay forever mute, so far as I know, but didn't M-B add the option of a chirp to the E-Class sometime after '03? I don't care for cars that chirp and chuckle like a crazed gerbil, and if that's how the E sounds, I'll pass. Our dear departed E39 BMW whistled like Flipper, though, which I thought was kinda neat.

Anyone have a sound clip of this chirp? What does it sound like?
I actually like the beeps on Toyota/Lexus cars. Not so quiet, that you need a second look or anything, but not too loud that you're afraid to wake up the whoe neighborhood.

My '06 chirps and I hate it. There should be a choice in the menu to turn it off. I know the stealer can do it, even though they may charge. I will get it done next time in. Discreet is always better.

Unforuntately, setting can only be done through the SDS --- typically the dealership. Steve (MbenzNL) can do it too.
Hope this helps

I like it (even though I am for discreet). Probably a sign of old age. It is happening to me more often where I asked myself whether I had locked my car after leaving my car some distance away. Chirping helps me to reconfirm.

I have an '04 E320 and I had the dealer program it for me. It beeps in concert with the flashing lights. Three beeps when it locks and one beep when it unlocks.
I was charged $30 by Phoenix Motors.
My wife really likes this feature because she can simple listen to the beeps as she walks away from the car. Now these are beeps not the reduculous horn honking that cheaper cars use. I hate that because as you are walking through a parking lot, horns are honking all over the place.

Like the chirps or not, it does serve a purpose. If the chirp is enabled and you lock it it will as expected chirp. However, if you lock the car but not all doors are completely closed it will not chirp.
It could be beneficial if parking outside in the rain so you don't get water damanage in the car. The kids doesn't always make sure that the doors are closed....well, mine at least.

Mine never did beep until I had a battery failure along with other electronic issues. When I got the car back from the dealer, the beep is the first thing I noticed. I like the non-intrusive low beep sound

I am bringing it into the shop today for another issue as well, so I'll let y'all know how it turns out.
I was always under the assumption that the 03' never had the feature, so it is good to hear that there is hope.

I was in and out of the dealership today during my lunch. It was great!! Big props to my SA, Ron Perkins, of RBM of Atlanta.
Per GearHead's suggestion, I had them set it at 50%. Mission accomplished, and I like it!
Thank you board for the help!

Demented!
Just had an anti-social thought. Wouldn't it be neat to have your car do a farting sound when you lock it? People give you a dirty look anyway. Why not?

I had my chirp activated in July. My Audi has a very low chirp that comes from the back of the car and I always liked it. It is not very loud. My SA did not know that this was possible so I challenged the head mechanic to find how to do it. He found that you needed to hook up the SDS into the port in the trunk and change the setting there. I can not remember if it was labeled "alarm" or something strange, but he told me that it was a bit obscure. Either way, I got the volume set at about 50% and it is very subtle. I truly like it!
The best thing about it is that if you want to do a global unlock, you know if you hit it once or twice. Sometimes you hit the unlock button once but it did not get the signal, so you still know to hit it two more times.
This feature should be accessible through the MFD, but I am glad that I could turn it off if I got tired of it. But I doubt I will. BTW Bud, my dealer did not charge me anything for changing the setting.

I don't know why this feature isn't activated in all cars imported by MBUSA. What would it cost to have the factory set it on during manufacturing?
Steve, I'm P.O.'d now that my dealer charged me to do it. How's the weather

The weather is GREAT! I have not had time to get to my place up in Vail since July and I can’t wait to hit the slopes! I have been so busy that I have not yet put my winter wheels on any of my cars yet. So I drove through at least 6 inches of very wet snow with high-performance summer-only tires on my Audi. I must admit that it was fun. One of my many projects this weekend will be to switch out the wheels on at least one car.
