2007 E Class shifiting

Hello fellow 2007 E classers,

I noticed today when I was driving that if I shift my shifter to the left it drops to gear 1. Is this right? My 2004 downshift from D to 4 gear. I had a 4 matic and now my new 4 matic downshifts to 1.

Is this normal? Why would they do that? You never know when you might need that extra burst to pass someone.

Thanks

The transmission downshifts one gear for each quick tap to the left. It will downshift to the lowest gear consistent with the car's speed if you hold it to the left for a second or two. If the car's going slowly enough, that will be first gear. That hasn't changed between model year 2003-04 and model year 2007.

Newer logic in the control unit selects gear based on speed/load. If you are at a dead stop, it would now shift directly to 1 right with a single tap to the left correct?

Did this 2004 model have a 5 or 7 speed automatic?

Thanks for the help. I am pretty sure with my 04 4Matic that even when I was at a dead stop it would be at gear 4 when I tapped to the left.

The 2004 had a 5 speed automatic ONLY for the 4Matic verion. Everything else was a 7 speed

Tapping it will drop to 4th gear. Holding it for over one second will downshift as low as possible.
