I was looking at E 350's and E 550s both AWD & RWD today and noticed that all 4 tires on each of the cars were the same size front and rear whether RWD or AWD. The brochure states that the Sports Pkg on the E 550s would have different sizes front to rear. What gives?

4 matic vehicles will have the same size tire all around for optimum traction. RWD will have a staggered setup. This is regardless of E350 or E550.

I know why 4WD vehicles must have 4 wheels/tires all the same, but at this dealership ALL the cars (RWD & 4WD) had 4 matching wheel/tire sizes. Thats why I was surprised.

RWD cars will have matching wheel/tire sizes unless they have the optional 333 Sport Package. Sport wheels are staggered 18". Non-sport are matching 17".

My '05 had the exact same "thick" steering feel. The steering in my new '07 does not. The steering (and the brakes) are much improved in "feel".

No sir, I think I know which one you are talking about. I think it belongs to another customer. I had custom ordered mine a looong time back. I haven't gone back to see if its still there or not. Perhaps Vadim, can chime in?

Let me know when you pick that E350 sport or E550 sport up.

20+ to list......
Both the RWD E350 & E550 Sport have staggered width tires, 245/40/18 in the front, and 265/35/18 out back, which are the exact same sizes as the stock E55 tires.

Well i had a good look at the tyres last week end and i have to say the rears will need replacing by 30,000 kms and the fronts by 35,000.

The tyres that came standard on my car are Continental Contisport contact 2.

Tires w/ Sports Pkg

From the available literature, I take it the car comes with "Summer" Tires (staggered-different sizes front to rear). Are there NO "All Season Tires available for the car when equipped with the Sports Pkg? Do fellow N.E USA owners put "Winter (Snow) Tires" on? Do you put rears only or front AND rears on? Or do you use another car on snow days? (The roads here are down to central dry pavement usually within 1 or 2 days after a snow here, with piles on the sides of the road.)

Your assumption is incorrect. The tires that come std are all season.

I believe that the all-season tires only come with the car when you ordered a 4Matic. Otherwise the crappy contentials sports are put on..

My 4Matic has a set of: Michelon Pilot HX MXM

How do you like the E550 4 matic?

I am looking at leasing one now, especially if the "trunk money" applies to that model. I'm coming out of an A6 4.2 awd, but haven't found an E550 4matic to drive yet. I'm sure it is still plenty quick. Any issues with the 5 spd. trans. compared with the new 7 speed? I'm thinking that might even be an advantage since they hopefully have the "bugs" out of the 5 speed tranny by now. Are there any other differences between the RWD and AWD models. I would order one with the exact same equipment as yours. TIA!

The 5 speed is the most trusted and reliable transmission since its well over 5 years old now.

Get that E550 4 matic, and go tear up the roads with 380hp. you will love it. I think its split 40 front and 60 rear.

Mine came with Continental all season tires. That is the standard tire for all cars except E63 AMG.

What I wanted to say was that all season tires are standard for all cars except E63 AMG, not that the Continental brand is standard.

Not correct on either counts. The Continentals are all-seasons; 18" all seasons are standard on both 2WD and AWD sport models. Only the rear widths are different between the 2WD and AWD models.

And the Continentals are great tires...no worse than the Michelins.

Well checking our sponsor, the tirerack, for 265/35-18 touring AS the only tire I see is the Continental; no Michelins.

I've seen Michelins on the 550 Sports optioned RWD cars on the lots of L.I. dealers. But you're right... not at Tirerack.com & not at the Michelin website, so Its still a mystery.

Hopefully so have the problems! I can't think of anyone here who has gone thru what I have. Everyone says my '04 was an anomaly. Obviously, I believe them.
