The 7 on an 07

I am so close to pulling the trigger on an 07 E550 but I'll definately need to drive it again for an extended period. Thing is I did go drive a LS460 and a curious thing happened. It has an 8 speed tranny, and I personally think they have a BIG problem on their hands. The car could never seem to get comfortable in a gear. ALWAYS it seemed upshifting/downshifting, and not all that smooth.

I am doubting myself now about my test drive on the Mercedes. Was the 7 speed doing this? Obviously an extended test drive will answer the question, but what are the experiences out there with everyday driving?

For kicks - how many gears is to many on an automatic?? I'm thinking 8.

I'm thinking 7 is more than enough.

My transmission is so smooth that the shifts are barely perceptable. I think 7 is the perfect number of ratios.

The 7G shifts perfectly, I cant notice a single shift when driving normally, but stomp on the E63 and you can somewhat notice it shift. However the 5.5 liter engine and the 7G are a match made in heaven.

Went to the Taste of Lexus event in NY and drove the new LS460. While the car was pretty luxurious, I hated the tranny. It up****ed way too quick. Going around the slolam, it upshifted and downshifted way too much. Slowing down for corners then gunning it took too long to downshift.

The 7-speed in the S550 I drove around the course was much better, stayed in the right gear for the application and throttle I applied.

I think 8 speeds is a little too much, perhaps for highway cruising but for around down, it'll gear hunt too much I think.

I'm very pleased with the 7Speed even with my teeny tiny 350

I moved from the 05 LS430 to the 06 E350 and while the LS is quieter, plusher and softer, it was boring and big. I looked at the LS460 and don't like the dash board design or layout.

I don't know why but for distance, I get less tired driving the E. I don't feel a need to stop as often.

I think the E's dashboard is the best around. I like it more than the new S Class.

Sounds good guys. I'm no longer on the fence. I'm pretty sure I'll be moving to an '07 soon... a silky smooth 7 speed?.... MMMmmmmm! That would be a nice change.

SL550
Other than a somewhat clunky 1-2 shift when cold (and only the first shift leaving my house in the morning, never an issue after that), I've found the 7-speed to be very smooth. And this is coming from a guy who has almost always had manual transmissions, even in my old X5, and is not an auto tranny fan. Go for the E550...that car is amazing!

Thanks for all of the input. That's what I thought I remembered. I hoping to sneak away later this afternoon and see if I can't get the car for a few hours.
Thanks again
