Navigation Retrofit Cost
I am contimplating doing the Nav Retrofit for my 03 e500. I would be interested in finding out what people paid for the complete parts (Command, DVD, etc). TIA

You want to get in touch with MBenz NL, otherwise known as Steve. If anyone can retrofit nav into an '03, he can. http://members.lycos.nl/mbenz/contact_me.htm
The fiasco mentioned was (in broad and probably inaccurate outline) that MBUSA took navigation orders from '03 buyers before the system was ready, with promises that their cars would be retrofitted with navigation. When MBUSA decided that they couldn't retrofit after all, they swapped the non-nav cars for new cars that had navigation. It amounted to several hundred cars, or at any rate a lot.

OK, here it goes.... I just finished mine today, I have a late build (that is VERY important) '03 E500, bought the Euro COMAND 7039 (eBay) $470 shipped, a DVD unit (refurb, eBay) for $247 shipped, bought a 2005.3 DVD for $37 shipped, and the splitter 210 820 24 89 at the dealer ($40 delivered, I get a discount).
My car is prewired because it is a late build, all I had to do is connect the MOST loop so it recognizes the DVD in the trunk. All the rest is pretty simple stuff, but you must have some car install knowledge. For non-installers, I strongly recommend MBenzNL or the dealer.
It works perfectly, my cost was less than $800 and did it myself with LOTS of patience. I still need to get the trunk side panel and the bracket, so figure about another couple of hundred.
Cheers,
Edward

DIY Install
I installed mine last week and now the only thing missing is the trunk panel. MB is telling me that they don't make a panel for the 2003 E320.
The install was not too bad, importantly due to the prewiring. Total cost for my unit was about $1300 US (which includes the cost of the trunck panel)
