Unable to lock car

Unable to lock car

Yesterday, I was unable to unlock my car, both by keyless go, and the key. I took it to the dealer, and they checked the key signal, and it was fine. By the time I got to the dealer, the locking system was working. I left, and attempted to lock the car, and it would not lock. I again drove to the dealer, and the car locked and unlocked like a charm. Tonight, the car will absolutely not lock, nor will the trunk lock button work. I tried both keys, and neither will work, however, I can start the car. Does anyone know what could be causing this intermittant problem?

My car is an 03 E500 with only 10,000 miles.

There is a relay system on the vehicle that sends the infrared key commands to the car when you push the buttons. If that system goes out, you'll lose many of the features for your key and still be able to start the car.

The exact same thing happend to me last year. Sometimes, it would unlock, sometimes it wouldn't. I replaced the battery. Same results. Took my car to the dealer, and he said the contacts touching the battery come loose sometimes. He bent the contacts a little, and I haven't had issues since. Give that a try.

Thanks, guys! I am taking car to the dealer today. Had roadside assistance come out Sat. night to document problem when car wouldn't lock. Sometimes it will not unlock, either. Both problems are intermittant, which is frustrating. I am hoping it is just the key sensor problem. Will let you know.
