Transmission stuck in 2nd gear..

Today as I was leaving work, the car cold (0 Dec Celsius outside), I was approaching a street light at about 80km and stopped fast. As I started to pull away the car was stuck in 2nd gear. I tired to manually change it, didn't work, very strange. I had to to pull over and restart the car to fix the problem.

Has anyone else ever had this problem..

Yup. I've had it happen once or twice. It was one of a million problems that popped in & out of my car. The tranny was updated, had parts replaced, etc... as I said, one of a million intermittant problems. I'm out of that car now waiting for an '07 so I don't have a solution to offer you.

You "tried to manually change it"? What exactly do you mean by this? I assume with your car being an 04 you have a lot of expierience with how the tranny works and already know this but.. as long as your in 3 or above it should automatically upshift.

Anyways, you seem your better off than me. My 07 E has 600 miles and the other day it wouldnt come out of park. However, I turned the car off/back on and everything seemed fine. Its going in to the dealer tomorrow.

Slightly OT: But my salesman told me that there is a mode on the 7 speed for city driving where it only uses 5 of the 7 gears. I can't find mention of this anywhere. I'm assuming he meant u could shift the tranny down into 5 and leave it thus it won't upshift to 6 or 7 unless you redline it? WOW what a feature.

Look to the left of your gear shift. You'll notice a button that reads "C/S". Depress it and you'll notice the MFD toggle between "C" and "S" next to the odometer.

"C" means Comfort, and starts you off in 2nd gear; "S" means Sport, and starts you off in 1st gear.

Play with it, you'll definitely notice a difference.

By pushing the lever to the left, dropping from 2nd to first and then holding it to the right again.

The thing about city driving only using 5 gears.. The car has no idea where you are, just how fast you are going. You can easily get to 6th gear city driving.

Not while driving, was advised your need to come to a stop , place in N or P before you change the mode.
