Question about temperature controls....(Pic included)

Hey Guys.

Thank you for all your help in the other thread about the wagon I'm looking to purchase.

I have another question about the temperature controls. Some of the wagons have one set of temperature controls in the front center dash, while others have a different set. Any idea as to why 2 different 2004 E 320 wagons would have different controls?

Here's one I see most often...the others have a screen in the middle with a dig readout...

And this is the one that uses digital electronics to maintain the preset temperature. Although the other ones have degree markings on the dials, think of them as having a painted blue bar above the knob whose painted on color changes to red the more you dial up the pointer clockwise. They are "relative" markings.

I didn't know that the four-zone climate control was optional on the E320, but apparently so. You'll notice that the four-zone has additional outlets at the back of the B-pillars, and also has temperature controls with a digital display for the rear-seat passengers. The rear-seat passengers can, in theory, set individual temp preferences, left and right, just like the front-seat occupants. And yes, the people up front can override the rear settings, if any kids back there decide that 60° or 90° is their ideal temperature setting.

Thanks Jmorgis, Barry, and DWP! I very much appreciate the help.

In 2 hours, I will pick up what may be our new 2004 E320 wagon. Wish me luck...I'll post pics when I get it, and look forward to making this forum my home again (I was once a member in 2004 for my ML350).

interesting thread, i didn't know anything about another set of temp controls, Mine is exactly like one in the pics, dials. I seen the new 07' E class are digitial read out, like the old W211, since they went away with the dials.

yes, even the 07 350's have the digital control which is similar to, but not the same as the one used in the 4 zone set up. Its a better controller than the old non digital one.

As a matter of reference:

First is 2 zone A/C - front only
Standard 03-05 E320 & 06 E350

Second is 4 zone A/C - front & rear
Standard 03-06 E500 (Optional 03-04 E320)

How does the 4-zone differ to the regular 2-zone apart from the obvious things like 4-zone and digital input screens? Has anyone had experience with both and can tell me if, on a hot day for example, it operates any quieter than the regular system?

Is it true that the REST function works better on 4-zone?
