I just picked up a 2007 E350 with the sport package and I'm looking for some feedback on tires. I had test driven a car prior to purchase that had Continental ContiPro Contact tires and liked the ride and handling. The car I bought is identically equipped to the tester, but I didn't notice until I got home that my car has Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 tires.

I test drove the car I purchased the day before delivery, but never thinked to check the tires. I didn't drive my car as aggressively as the one I tested, so I didn't notice a difference in the handling. I was looking at some of the comments at tirerack.com and found that the Michelins have generally poor ratings and the Continentals generally good ratings. Does anyone have any feedback one way or the other from their own cars? My experience is limited since I only have about 60 miles on my car now, and I've been taking it easy considering engine break-in, etc.
I don't remember precisely, but if those are the same kind of Michelins that were on my LS400, I'd get them swapped out asap. After short wear they sucked in the rain --

Keep it civil folks, let's be polite.

No need for insults over Tires !!!

Yes, I completely agree. There is no need for insults over tires ! There is a wealth of information @ www.tirerack.com for all to read. It is very evident that one cannot generalize about one tire manufacturer v's another. Each manufacturer has their OEM cheapie tires. IMO, Mercedes has no justification for suppling poorly rated tires on the E Class; for example, the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4, rated the second worst tire (#15/16) in the Grand Touring All Season category. The E Class is surely more deserving of better perfoming tires than what is offered by those in the "Grand Touring" A/S category.
For my forthcoming Bluetec, I will trade the 16" Michelin Energy for 17" Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. According to test results conducted by Tirerack, the Pilot Sport A/S is the highest rated in its class of Ultra High Performance All Seasons. For the past four years, my wife has had these tires on her 330 Ci. They perform well in the wet or dry and they also perform satisfactorily in light snow. I highly recommend the Pilot Sport A/S. After 25,000 kms, these tires show little wear.

I used to have the Sport A/S on another car - they handled well, good wear, but got noiser later in life.

Also I heard that the Sport A/S was not recommended on the E, has this changed?

Do you recall where you read this opinion or from whom you heard it ? I would be interested in any first hand feedback that you can offer. Any suggestions for a better performing all season tire for the E Class would be most welcome. As I mentioned in my previous post, I simply do not believe that either the Continental ContiProContact or the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 (both Grand Touring all seasons fitted as OEM tires for NA) match the chassis quality of the E320 or E350/550.
I have searched Tirerack's consumer reviews of the Pilot sport A/S on various MB models (inc. many E210); there are more than 90 reviews of the Pilot Sport A/S by MB owners. The overall rating is about 8.4/10, which is higher than any other brand of high performance all season tire on Mercedes models. The lowest ratings were for the Michelin Pilot HX MXM4.

Date: January 16, 2004
Order No.: P-B-40.10/43
Supersedes:
Group: 40
SUBJECT:
All Passenger Models Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Tires
Please be advised that the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S (all-season) is not an approved (nor certified) Mercedes-Benz tire for any Mercedes-Benz passenger vehicle. Use of the above mentioned tire can cause vehicle tracking issues which MBUSA will not attempt to correct. MBUSA will not perform warranty wheel alignments on any subject vehicle which has any non-approved wheel/tire package installed. Note : This should not be mistaken for the Michelin Pilot Sport, which is approved for many Mercedes-Benz applications.

Thank you very much for this important info. In light of this, I will likely go with 245/45 x17" Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 for three seasons and install Blizzack LM25s on the 16" OEM alloys for winter.
